Best From The West: Ascot – 8th April 2023

WATC Derby Day is very light on numbers but the Derby is an excellent betting event.

There are only eight running, half are fillies and there are five horses under double figures so you can make claims in many different directions.

When the Oaks winner runs and does it impressively, it is hard to avoid her but there seems such an obvious play here.

Just two weeks ago, the Tulloch Stakes was run and Awesome John was a very respectable third, battling hard.

Well since then they didn't go to the Australian Derby however the second horse there was Major Beel and he won the big one so well last week.

John O'Shea mooted him running here a few weeks ago and you'd think William Pike will be right on the ball when the moves come.

The locals are always hard to beat and it has been over a decade since a non-Perth horse won but horses don't usually arrive with this type of form.

Two races later they run the Listed Old Comrade Stakes and there are also a few hopes here.

One who is ready to fire now is Last Of The Line. Third up at the mile, he might sit a bit closer here.

Back last prep he ran excellent races in the RJ Peters and the Railway. That bodes well in this company now at the right journey for him.

If the money comes for him then that is even more evidence he's right to attack here.
