Best From The West: Ascot – 15th April 2023

The Quokka has arrived and for some it can’t come fast enough.

There was, and is, much conjecture about how it has all panned out but from the race's perspective, it has been spiced up too.

With the potential of a little bit of rain around, the track won't be flint hard so doubt it will be up the fence.

Of course much of the attention, quite rightly, will be centred around Amelia's Jewel and that only hyped up after Tuesday.

It's a top race but over the 1200m, more than happy to have something on Bella Nipotina each way.

She finds a lovely gate so she can sit midfield but off the rails. From there Ben Melham will be looking to manoeuvre for the clear running.

The pressure will be flowing early and runs should appear. When that happened in the Manikato, she exploded to win by panels.

Happy to ignore the Newmarket because around that she was so good in the Lightning and William Reid and a soft (or worse) track just suits more.

The race after is another marsupial event and in the Joey we are going for Comfort Me to get back into the winner's list.

Sure he hasn't done that for a while but his runs last prep were so good. Close in the Eurythmic and Lee Steere, he then was runner up in the G1 Railway and even closer in the Gold Rush.

First up he flashed home in the Roma Cup and the added ground will only help.

Thinking here is they will scoot along and his finishing speed will be hard to hold out.
