North utility Tarryn Thomas named to make AFL return

Tarryn Thomas is among three inclusions for North Melbourne against Essendon while key forward Harry Himmelberg has been cleared to return for GWS.

North Melbourne have confirmed troubled utility Tarryn Thomas's return to AFL action among three changes for their clash with Essendon.

Thomas's career hung in the balance when he was stood down by the Kangaroos for a second time in March amid concerns over his behaviour towards women.

The 23-year-old returned to training last month and has played three VFL matches, proving his readiness for Sunday's encounter with the Bombers at Marvel Stadium.

Thomas has been named on the bench for his first senior game since round 15 last year.

"He's had a body of work for three or four weeks, playing VFL," North Melbourne caretaker coach Brett Ratten said this week.

"It was pretty hard conditions last week in the VFL game - it was quite wet and hard to hold your feet - but his second half was pretty good. He really got going,"

Darcy Tucker and Liam Shiels also return for North Melbourne, who dropped Daniel Howell, Tom Powell and Charlie Lazzaro after last week's loss to Collingwood.

It was the second-from-bottom Kangaroos' ninth-straight defeat.

Dylan Shiel returns from a foot injury to bolster Essendon's midfield while Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti and Nick Bryan have been dropped.

Richmond have axed inexperienced tall Ben Miller for Sunday's clash with GWS at Giants Stadium.

Harry Himmelberg returns from concussion protocols for the Giants, replacing small forward Jake Peatling.

"It's great to welcome Harry back into the side," GWS coach Adam Kingsley said.

"He's recovered really well from the concussion he sustained two weeks ago and has passed all the protocols to take his place in the line-up this week.

"We know he's been a fantastic player for us over a long period of time now and he'll certainly bolster our forward line this week as we get set to take on the Tigers."

Former Richmond assistant Kingsley will tackle the Tigers for the first time since taking the GWS senior job last August.

"They're a club I know well, having spent so much time there, and it's a challenge we're all really looking forward to," Kingsley said.

"They had a great performance against the Power last week, so we certainly know what they're capable of, but we're excited to be back in front of our home fans at Giants Stadium for what should be a really entertaining game."
