Australian Harness Racing Preview – 18th February 2023

Sydneysiders will get their first look at harness racing’s new poster boy Captain Ravishing in Saturday night’s Group 1 Chariots of Fire at Menangle and he is drawn to put on a show.

The exciting four-year-old arrives in the harbour city carrying a huge boom having won by some huge margins and recorded slick times in Victoria.

Captain Ravishing finished his three-year-old season with a track record-breaking romp by 29m in the Breeders Crown Final at Melton and was just as impressive when he resumed two weeks ago, working before clearing out to win the 4YO Bonanza by close to 22m.

He is two from two second-up so will only strip fitter and the ace draw will allow driver Mark Pitt to take full advantage of his trademark speed.

Catch A Wave is another talented Victorian who put three wins together at Melton including the Group 1 Vicbred Super Series Final before venturing to Sydney last week where he drew out and raced up to four wide when fourth in the Paleface Adios.

He draws a few spots lower and that can see him improve.

The Kiwi Republican Party looked good when he led to win the Hondo Grattan here a fortnight ago in his Australian debut.

A wider draw makes this a tougher task but his strike rate is impressive.

Heza Son Of Agun draws the same barrier he had when winning last week's Paleface Adios so he can be a factor again along with Tims A Trooper who is favourably drawn and will be fitter for the fresh placing.

Smart mares Tay Tay and Tough Tilly clash again in the Robin Dundee Stakes and while the former has the best of the barrier draw both look strong chances to earn a berth in next week's Queen Elizabeth II Mile.

The fillies step out earlier in the night in the heats of the NSW Oaks where Kahlua Flybye and Jewel Melody both get the right draw to win their respective heats.

BEST BETS:

Menangle Saturday Race 1 #4 No Time Like Now @ $4.40 – The former Kiwi did a good job when runner up at his Australian debut. Fitter and has won second up before.

Melton Saturday Race 9 #7 Wow Hes A Rock Star @ $7.00 – Missed by just a head when runner up last start and while drawn wider he looks a decent chance to go one better.
