Vinery Stud Stakes (G1)
A surprise win to the $21 prospect Fenway, who put up a solid staying performance to score. She settled nicely in fourth place before moving up well nearing the home turn. She took the lead at the 200m and then fought back strongly to score by a short neck in a good trial for the ATC Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) on 11 April. First Seal raced in eighth place, one off the rails. She was switched out to make her run rounding the home turn, got to second at the 100m but was held by the winner for second. It was later reported that she had bled from one nostril and will require a stewards’ clearance after trailing before racing again. Thunder Lady was back in tenth place, one off the rails. She fanned deep at the home turn and ran on resolutely for a sound third. Ballet Suite was well back in 12th place to the home turn. She improved between runners from the 200m and ran on strongly for (1.4 lengths) fourth, looking on track for the ATC Australian Oaks trip of 2400m. Winx was near last in the 14-horse field to the home turn, Tommy Berry looked for a run between runners on straightening but was checked at the 300m. She then ran on again, making good late ground for an unlucky (2 lengths) fifth. VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m) winner Set Square was sixth, one off the rails, but was under pressure from the 600m and raced well below her best form, weakening for (4.8 lengths) 11th.
