This G2 3yo only over 2000m went to the filly Tokorangi that had not won since last season but had been desperately unlucky multiple times. She raced sixth or seventh the outer and then once angled out the run in surged and led at the 100m to win by almost two lengths in 2:03.03. The winners and where they came from on the home turn were led (on the fence and a length clear), fourth (four-off the inside and two and a half lengths from the leader), led (one-off the inside and a neck in front), sixth (five-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), fifth (six-off the inside and four lengths from the leader), second (two-off the inside and half a length from the leader), third (on the fence and a length and a half from the leader), fourth (one-off the inside and three lengths from the leader) and fourth (one-off the inside and a length and a half from the leader). Tokorangi was winning her second race in eight starts (she won a juvenile very easily at what was her second start) and she deserved it too after so much bad luck this season. Obviously it was her first Blacktype win but it goes with a G3 third on this track too in October of last year. To show how unlucky this filly has been this season she has a fourth and a fifth at G1 to go with a fourth at G3 and a fifth at Listed level. She is a run on filly this season so finds slamming doors and bad luck often but today at G2 she surged past her rivals and revelled in the 2000m. In what looks a weak G1 Derby this year she has become more than just a chance. Second home today was Zee Falls, another filly (there were only three in this field and they ran first, second and sixth). She was wide before working to the lead and kicked well until headed at the 100m. Third home was Perfect Scenario that raced fourth mostly and reached third at the 200m and was beaten two lengths at the line. Fourth home and catching eye was the Central Districts visitor Montre Moi that settled back tenth early and was last across the top but came home hard wide out and reached fourth with 25m to go. He was beaten just over two lengths and looks a real G1 Derby player. Fifth home was Tannahill that after being in the trail early was soon fifth the inner then back to eighth across the top but he ran home well and reached fifth at the 25m beaten just under two and a half lengths. Sixth home was the third filly in the field Cheaperthandivorce that settled well back and came wide on the home turn before finding the line and was beaten just under three and a half lengths. Next home was the maiden Brazier that was trapped wide the whole way and went up fifth early and reached third before the home turn. He wilted from second at the 300m and 200m and was still fourth at the 100m and it really was a big effort. Next home was Macs that trailed the leaders on the inner on settling then got held up until the final 150m but wilted anyway. Ember Attack was ninth and ran on after being last turning for home while the last three across the line were beaten over six and a half lengths and as far as over sixteen lengths. This was not a strong field overall but could well provide the G1 Derby quinella (Tokorangi and Montre Moi) and the fillies really flexed their superiority again this season by running first and second and a sound sixth. The winning time today of 2:03.03 was three lengths superior to the G2 3yo fillies only event held in R7 today and won easily by the current top filly Amarelinha (2:03.52).
