The Listed 3yo over 1400m went to the odds on runner Son Of Maher that won a lot easier than his half a neck margin would suggest. After going down a nose in his previous outing at G1 over 1600m the Australian bred colt was always handy the outer before being sent up wide to challenge turning in. He gained a narrow lead at the 200m and held onto it with something to spare at the line to win his third race in ten starts. His aim is the G1 NZ Derby safely through a middle distance event clockwise next time to the races. Replique ran home hard closer in from well back for second having just cleared maidens prior. The filly has come good this year and looks to have more wins in store and blacktype for that matter. Princess Davone ran on well once into clear air for third having sat handy the inner for most of the race. Sniparinda after working to the lead after 400m and being narrowly headed at the 200m only lost third money on the post. Magic Mavis caught the eye running home gamely after being last away due to an awkward start. Waylay after being back and wide throughout was brave in finishing sixth being beaten three lengths. Halleloojah found the 1400m too far and looks just a sprinter while Cantilena was disappointing as was Brugel. Ruby Row finished last but got her tongue over the bit and choked down the concluding stages according to her rider so can be forgiven. The winning time of 1:25.29 was nothing fantastic with a Ratings 75 for the older horses two races earlier clocking 1:24.60 (just over four lengths superior). Son Of Maher has size but whether he is a stayer is still debatable plus is yet to race right-handed but that should all be known soon. Rain-affected footing is however one thing he needs to stretch out properly. Replique should have a good autumn as will Princess Davone and Magic Mavis while Waylay looks like she will run middle distance now.
