Type: OPEN

This G3 at WFA over a mile drew an ordinary field and saw an 8yo local in Gallant Boy win by half a head over the favourite Boots 'N' All. The track was allowed to be released as a Good3 but that was simply not true as the times all day were tepid and downright dreadful in some events. The winners and where they were turning for home in race order were second (outer and half a length from the leader), seventh (five-wide and three lengths from the leader), led (two lengths clear and one-off the fence), ninth (three-off the fence and three and a half lengths from the leader), fourth (two-off the fence and two lengths from the leader), led (inside and two lengths clear), second (one-off the fence and three lengths from the leader), sixth (inner and two lengths from the leader) and fifth (five-off the fence and two and a half lengths from the leader). Gallant Boy was runner up in this last year behind a stablemate and today from the outside gate settled well back and was till tenth the inside across the top but saved ground and came through sixth turning for home. The old fella was third at the 300m and second at the 200m and 100m before after having a ding donger got a narrow lead with 10m to go and scored by half a head in 1:35.60. It was his eleventh win from fifty-seven starts and first ever at WFA. Boots 'N' All was ridden over-confidently after being second last away then improving ninth the inner into sixth the inside across the top. The favourite was worked off and sent up wide fast to third and five-out turning for home then was let rip to lead and go clear at the 300m. That is a long way out at Wingatui for the go button to be pushed and the 6yo had a lone threat the final stages and got beaten narrowly. Accidental Offside was on the pace then took the lead before the midway point and then went clear by two lengths before turning in a length ahead. He fought well once headed at the 300m by the eventual runner up and at the 200m by the eventual winner. Kolonel Kev got back but ran on well from eighth turning in and his form for several runs in a row has come in and around Boots 'N' All. The rest got beaten over five lengths and up to more than a dozen lengths with last year's winner Tommy Tucker finishing last. This was not a G3 level field and WFA depth in the South Island is not really ever taken seriously anymore with the last decade quite damning and in fact this century sees a deluge of data to back that up. Also bear in mind Boots 'N' All 9 (second today) and Kolonel Kev (fourth today) have been able to finish sixth and fifth respectively (both beaten five lengths) at G1 under WFA at Trentham in December on slow ground showing just how poor the WFA level has become in New Zealand.
