Japan Racing Preview - JRA best bets 18th March 2023

Three JRA venues this weekend and plenty of quality racing. We are just a week away from the start of the Spring Grade 1 season so many of the black-types this weekend will be vital lead-ups to those features. There are two Grade 3 races on Saturday - the Flower Cup over 1800m at Nakayama and the Falcon Stakes over 1400m at Chukyo.

Some nice betting opportunities await, with the best of the day as follows:

Chukyo Dirt Race 12 - #10 Bob's Yer Uncle

This entire exclusively contested races of a mile and further until this prep. In two runs this time in work the Okubo stable has kept him to 1400m contests and he has responded well with a couple of minor placings, both on the dirt at Hanshin. Last time he drove hard late and was beaten less than a length by Lord Orden when well in commission. Expect him to be peaking today in a race that lacks a great deal of depth.

Despite racing on the NAR circuit this prep, King Ku might be the danger. His three wins from three starts since resuming have been impressive. It should be noted he has raced well on the JRA circuit in previous campaigns, registering multiple placings. With the confidence high he can run well again.

Hanshin Dirt Race 6 - #6 T O Ricardo

A tidy effort when resuming last start over this course and distance put the flashing red light on this lightly raced colt. He was ridden aggressively from a very wide gate that day to find the lead and wouldn't surrender until late in proceedings. He strips a lot fitter today and won't spend us much in the early exchanges from a far better alley. His figure last start is considerably clear of the nearest rival, so if the son of Pyro merely holds his first-up form he should be winning.

Schnee is a promising filly who hasn't raced since a 5-length maiden win over 1800m at Chukyo Dirt ten weeks ago. She needs to find a bit more to match our top pick but there is certainly plenty of scope for improvement at just her fourth race start.

Nakayama Race 9 - #7 Jun Blossom

Some strong form lines converge in this nice race but Jun Blossom, with Lemaire taking over today, looks perfectly placed to grab a well-deserved win. He has been close to the mark at all three runs this campaign, the latest an eye-catching second when he stepped back to 1800m at Hanshin. A return to his preferred 2000m journey is timely. The premier hoop can settle the four-year-old in the leading division and he should be too strong in the concluding stages.

The consistent Stop The Time heads a host of each-way chances. He has been in the top-three at all five runs this prep, and saves his best form for the ten-furlong trip. His best figures are right up there with Jun Blossom, although he may have levelled out at this stage of the preparation.

Nakayama Dirt Race 12 - #2 Lovero

Another Lemaire mount can take out the last. His two runs this prep, both over 1400m at Tokyo Dirt, have been solid. Last time he tackled a slightly better race than this and shared the lead into the straight before finding a couple better. Coming back to 1200m for this first time is the only query, but his free-rolling racing pattern should be suited to this sharper journey. Gate two will ensure he enjoys all the favours.

Kanzashi is a six-furlong specialist who is an obvious danger. She has a win and a very close second from two runs this prep, both over today's course and distance. Her figures don't quite measure up to Lovero but she keeps improving and is in her comfort zone today.
