ROSEHILL September 7

RACE 2 (8) KIPSBAY: A stable switch from Chris Waller to Newcastle's Nathan Doyle has done this promising 4YO no harm judging by his impressive first-up win at Gosford. It was only a Class 1 over 1100m but it was an arrogant win under 60.5kg and stamped him as a sprinter ready to climb quickly through the classes. This moderate Midway BM72 looks a nice step for him off that win.

RACE 7 (11) IN SECRET: Suffered her first loss in three starts when resuming in the G2 Silver Shadow Stakes over 1200m at Randwick where she may have won if she had secured clear running at the vital stage. With that strong run under her belt and her obvious scope for improvement she will be a match for this quality field, noting Godolphin were happy to bypass a heavy track at Randwick last week knowing this race under a favourable weight scale was waiting for her. It reads well now she has drawn a favourable gate.

RACE 8 (4) MR MOZART: This imposing chestnut went to a new level from the time Willy Pike teamed with him in the autumn. It's been a perfect union as Pike's three rides on the 4YO before his spell resulted in classy Group wins in the Phar Lap, Doncaster Prelude and Hawkesbury Guineas and they are reunited again under race conditions after Tommy Berry rode him in two recent trials. His most recent trial win at Canterbury was a super effort and he maps to get all the favours sitting on the back of the speed from his good draw.

FOR VALUE

RACE 4 (8) MORETHANNUMBERONE: Going well since he joined the Neasham stable and she has him placed to advantage on his best form. Has been looking for his first go at this distance.

RACE 6 (11) ZOU TIGER: Impressive maiden win from the front when resuming. Big improver and will be hard to get past if the track is favoring on pace runners.

FLEMINGTON September 10

RACE 3 (6) OJAI (EW) : Good filly. Showed her quality when resuming at Caulfield and can only improve off that placing.

RACE 5 (1) I'M THUNDERSTRUCK: On his way to being the best in Melbourne up to 2000m Set to go on from his excellent first-up second.

RACE 6 (14) I AM BENE (EW): Progressive mare. Should relish a strong 1400m at Flemington.

RACE 9 (3) TIJUANA (EW): Well placed to improve off his eye catching first-up placing at Caulfield.

PLAYING THE ROSEHILL QUADDIE

RACE 7: A fitter (11) IN SECRET is well placed from her good gate under the weight scale. She was a touch unlucky first-up and will be suited if the track is improving. The San Domenico form is confusing. The winner (6) SWEET RIDE beat the placegetters (5) NETTUNO and (3) SWISS EXILE fair and square but they meet him 2kg better and are much shorter in the betting. This will tell us plenty about whether the top 2YO form of (7) FIREBURN and her stablemate (2) SEJARDAN – mostly on heavy tracks – can be trusted going into the spring. Wary of a strong return from SEJARDAN – his trials have been more positive than FIREBURN. (1) BEST OF BORDEAUX is the one that had excuses in the San Domenico. He can improve sharply if he finds the lead but is he purely a fast wet tracker?

RACE 8: Genuine tempo from (12) PRIME CANDIDATE and (3) ELLSBERG should set this up for the big gelding (4) MR MOZART to enjoy a perfect trail from his good draw. Went to a new peak with an impressive sequence of wins before his spell and showed he was in the right form for his return with an excellent trial win at Canterbury last week when he finished over the top of ELLSBERG. The latter flies when fresh on his home track at Rosehill and he did trial without his raceday blinkers. Expect a bold run from PRIME CANDIDATE if the track is favouring on pace runners. Topweight (1) KEMENTARI has all the right credentials but the pattern will be vital to his chances as he will be conceding weight and a start under 59kg. (10) JAMAEA, (9) ATISHU and (7) RUSTIC STEEL are other backmarkers in the mix if it's playing fair.

RACE 9: Biggest test for the impressive (10) SHADES OF ROSE from her wide draw. She has the tactical speed to cross and dictate but will be vulnerable if she is pressured in the first 800m. Big talent (6) ESPIONA was never tested in her recent trial. Expect J Mac will ride her with cover and have her coiled to unleash over the last 200m. (12) SKY COMMAND should keep the favourite running. That will give (6) IT'S ME, (8) MY WHISPER and (4) PALAISIPAN their chance to spring an upset. It's not an ideal set up for (1) STARTANTES under 58kg but don't discount her class.

RACE 10: Chris Waller's impressive improver (16) WATERFORD dominates the market off his strong last start win. He did it the hard way in the style of a horse destined for better things. The draw favors WATERFORD but he's facing a 3kg rise in weight off his Rosehill win in this class. (10) TAMERLANE, (3) O'MUDGEE and (15) GRACILISTYLA are the obvious inclusions in exotics.

TRIAL POINTERS

CANTERBURY September 1: MR MOZART recorded a classy win in the fastest 1100m heat (69.55; 38.15), settling some six lengths off the leaders and making up three lengths over the last 200m with something in reserve. REMARQUE made a good impression winning his 900m heat (57.83; 37.63).

WARWICK FARM August 29: Heavy fog blanketed the early heats with the runners in the first trial over 787m only visible over the last 200m. The winner SEJARDAN railed through on the inside of the leader BACCHANALIA for a solid win without either being extended while KEMENTARI finished off like he normally does in trials for a strong fourth. Golden Slipper winner FIREBURN had her second trial in the first 1200m heat (72.98; 35.81) and worked kindly under a quiet ride to finish fifth.

GOSFORD August 29: Kris Lees gave his classy gelding RUSTIC STEEL his first trial since his successive wins in The Coast and Scone Cup in May and he looks set for another successful campaign after working home from five lengths off the speed for a strong win in the fastest 1000m heat (60.52; 35.46).

ROSEHILL August 23: Last spring's Thousand Guineas winner YEARNING looked in great order finishing second in her 1030m heat (63.06; 34.37). She dropped back to last under a quiet ride from Willie Pike before railing through from the 400m with a classy surge that carried her past the bulk of the field in a matter of strides. Stretched out freely under no pressure in a sure sign she has come up in good form. Newly gelded REMARQUE has won only one race from seven starts but nobody doubts he has the talent to win good races. He's been a hype horse from day one and a lot of that is due to his barrier trial form as he has now won eight of his nine trials since he was a 2YO. This effort was no exception as he cruised home in his 900m heat (53.73; 33.30) by 4.5 lengths with plenty in reserve, again raising hopes that this could be his best prep. Another smart prospect CLEMENCEAU also worked nicely to win his 900m heat in slower time (54.82; 34.97).

HAWKESBURY August 22: The 1000m trial won by Zaaki saw Godolphin's enigmatic ROHERYN finish a strong third. He went just as well as Zaaki without any pressure being applied to chase the leaders from the turn.

WARWICK FARM August 15: Gosford Guineas winner BACCHANALIA is an imposing sort and looked in rude health working well within himself for an easy all the way win in his heat over 813m. The time was slow (49.22; 34.88) but he is certain to take a lot of benefit from the hitout.

ROSEHILL August 12: The black type heat over 900m won by Overpass (55.94; 34.00) saw SEJARDAN work to the line nicely while Golden Slipper winner FIREBURN was not asked for anything over the last 300m but then put in some strong work for 200m past the post. Stablemate SEJARDAN was also asked for more after the line, Gary Portelli obviously keen to ensure they both got a lot of benefit from this trial.
