RANDWICK October 10

Polytrack; Synthetic

15 Heats – 1 x 1250m (Open); 8 x 1080m (5 Open; 3 Maiden); 6 x 780m (2 Open; 1 2YO; 3 Maiden)

Another set of polytrack trials due to the wet weather with not much to get enthusiastic about.

One horse I will be keeping an eye on is Chris Waller's new import WELWAL, a well performed G2 winner of three races from seven starts up to 2100m in France.

His first trial augers well for his prospects in Australia as he impressed finishing a strong second to the smart filly MISS HELLFIRE in their heat over 1080m (65.12; 34.29). I was really taken by his easy work under James McDonald over the last 100m and he will be worth following as he gets into his campaign – might be an ideal type for the Villiers Stakes.

Others to make an impression in the open heats include MENSA MISSILE, ABSURDITY; YUMI, GAME THEORY, SHEEZA BELTER, AMORTAL and BOOMSONG.

The maiden heats were standard fare. Among the better performances were EXILE, CALIFORNIA PRESS, ESPRIT LUCAND, MELISSA, FALL FOR CINDY and CONCORDIA but always wary of synthetic track trial form.

The only 2YO trial was won by HEAD OF THE HERD, a $1.4 million colt by Snitzel from the Waterhouse/Bott yard.

He led the 780m heat and was put under a ride to hold off a bunched finish with stablemate COINCIDE making ground under pressure to finish second in reasonable time (46.02; 33.48).

There was less than a length covering the first seven over the line with the Godolphin pair FLEETWOOD and DIABELLI having the easiest trials. Would like to see them all trial again on the grass.

WARWICK FARM October 7

Polytrack; Synthetic

14 Heats – 3 x 1175m (2 Open; 1 Maiden); 11 x 740m (4 Open; 2 2YO; 5 Maiden)

A classy heat win by crack sprinter EDUARDO showed he is in the right form the tackle The Everest for the third time.

EDUARDO (Joe Pride): Jumped to a clear lead but was kept under restraint with a line of three joining him on the turn in his 740m heat. He was headed by the renowned trial performer SPACEBOY soon after but Nash Rawiller was kidding to them and his class kicked in as he lengthened stride impressively over the last 200m to win the trial by a soft 1.9 lengths in the fastest of the 11 heats over the distance (42.98; 32.95).

MA AND PA (Clarry Conners): A strong win by this Redoute's Choice 5YO in the quickest of the three 1175m heats (70.23; 35.40) in his second trial for his new trainer. He won four of his 11 starts for Chris Waller and can build on that judging by the way he worked to the line over the last 300m from behind the pace under a cold ride with plenty in reserve.

WONDEREACH (Matt Smith): Good reports about this Outreach gelding seem justified as he recorded an excellent debut trial win over 740m in fast time (43.35; 33.19). Led easily and was eager to go faster, pulling his way to a five lengths lead and coasting to the line with a lot in hand. Good maiden prospect.

In the 2YO heats the Snitzel filly TABATA SET was a sharp winner (43.74; 33.51) in much faster time than the colts heat winner BARBER (44.63; 34.39).

Other heat winners to make a good impression included CLEAR CHOICE, SUPRINA, SUMO STAR, WHINCHAT, SO AUDACIOUS and MY ELOISE.

Maidens to show up with nice efforts in their heats included GLOBAL EMPIRE, ALTIVO, FINE VINTAGE, CONSENZA, CHILLI JAM and GOOD LIEUTENANT.

ROSEHILL October 4

Inside Grass; Good 4

15 Heats – 5 x 1030m (3 Open; 2 Maiden); 10 x 900m (2 2YO; 3 Open; 5 Maiden)

The spotlight was on the Everest entrants JOYFUL FORTUNE and SHADES OF LOVE when they clashed in a fast heat over 900 metres.

JOYFUL FORTUNE showed his class to win the heat, leading from the jump and working well within himself to clock good time (53.93; 33.93) and hold off the smart mare JUAN DIVA in the run to the line. SHADES OF LOVE was restrained to trail the lead pair and put in nice work over the last 200m to finish a soft third, 1.8 lengths off the winner.

The fastest 900m heats were won by a pair of sharp maidens KAZOU and SPITZER.

KAZOU (Chris Waller): Unraced Zoustar filly made an impression running fourth in her first trial on September 20 and went right on with it here to win her 900m heat by six lengths in a quick 53.80 (34.48). It was obvious there was intent to give her a good test with Hugh Bowman allowing her to run out to a big lead under no pressure. She kept up the pace and was cruising over the last 200m in a rare show of speed for a Waller-trained trial runner.

SPITZER (Hawkes Racing): This unraced Star Turn gelding has been in the book since he beat the well performed Zou Tiger in his first trial in April. Ensured he will be well fancied for his debut by working strongly to get the better of a stablemate in his 900m heat, forging clear to win impressively in the fastest time (53.49; 34.43). Looks capable of an early maiden win.

Other maidens to make an impression in the 900m heats included PYROIS (unbeaten in four trials – failed at odds on only race start), I AM JADE and COVALENT.

The French Group 2 winner BABY RIDER was an interesting winner of his 900m heat in his first trial for Bjorn Baker. He's a 1600m-2400m performer but showed classy speed to rail through and win his heat (54.86; 34.23) after sitting behind the leaders.

BANANA QUEEN, eligible for low class restricted races, showed good speed to win the fastest 1030m heat (61..49; 34.57) with undue effort from the classy mare FORBIDDEN LOVE. One of the best trials in the 1030m heats came from the well performed BLAZE A TRAIL working to the line full of running in the heat won by ZEYREK (62.24; 35.23). He looks ready to run to his best but does need a good track.

There were two trials for the 2YOs over 900m with the Pride Of Dubai colt MAHARBA running much faster time (54.23; 34.95) than the easy fillies heat winner HER EXCELLENCY (56.41; 36.20). There were several strong trials in the colts heat from GITALONG, the wayward Randwick trial winner FAMEUX doing everything right under a soft ride, and GROUNDRUSH.

NOTED TRIALS

XX Kazou; Spitzer

X A Lot More Love; Baby Rider; Banana Queen; Blaze A Trail; Covalent; Delexo; Fameux; Gitalong; Groundrush; Her Excellency; I Am Jade; Joyful Fortune; Maharba; Metallicity; Notions; Pyrois.
