Mother Nature Destroys Another Loved Greyhound Track

The New South Wales G.B.O.T.A must be thinking mother nature is not so friendly. Just months after announcing Lismore Greyhound Track could no longer continue due to flooding and structural damage another of their tracks has suffered immense damage.

Photos on Tuesday and Wednesday started to circulate showing that Bathurst Greyhound Track had suffered immense damage both to the track surface and its surrounds. The second time within weeks considering flooding had hit the track just weeks earlier, however on that occasion with less force.

Bathurst Greyhound track runs adjacent to the Macquarie River in particular to the back straight of the track. The river burst its banks in such a way that had never been seen at the race track before. The ferocity of the water through the track was so strong that only one of the four starting boxes on the track appears operational.

Speaking to local greyhound identity Matt Griffiths, he stated that although the track is in terrible condition, the kennels and club house have not been damaged as they stand on higher ground. "It's a shame because its such a safe track, and it's part of the community,so many people love the track" Griffiths stated.

G.B.O.T.A  Ceo Allan Hilzinger has openly stated that sadly Kennerson Park may have run it's last greyhound race. As repair costs in way of simple dollars and cents, would not allow any real viable return for the track. This will create another long term headache for the G.B.O.T.A as it will need to consult with Greyhound Racing New South Wales for a potential new site, funding and support.

In the short term all TAB racing dates will be transferred to Dubbo and Gunnedah. In way of expansion there is also an exciting oppurtunity for Non-Tab track Lithgow to be allocated some TAB race dates. Lithgow as a non tab track is run by many volunteers and is a track that had recently received track upgrades that had been overseen by Brian Barrington.

The central west of New South Wales is a very prominent part of greyhound racing. Many respected rearers exist in and around the Bathurst area. It is absolutely imperative that a new track relocation for Bathurst be found that rids itself of flooding and other natural disaster issues.
