Rocknroll Ralph may be a somewhat troublesome gelding at times, but on Monday at Pinjarra he delivered Lara Brennan her first training win, a special one for the 47-year-old.

Ralph, as he's known around the stables has been far from an easy race prospect, with gaiting issues in the past as well as less than desirable manners at times, and on Monday he continued his great form, leading all the way in race 3 to win by a very comfortable margin of 12.6m in 1:59:1 over the 2185m trip.

With her introduction to horses at 18-years-old through her sister Kellie Grantham, Brennan soon made her debut as a stable hand for racehorse trainer Len Morton, before making the move the stables of Hec McLaren, eventually settling at Lou Luciani's where she spent around four-years working for the successful racing stable, before a change in codes saw Brennan working for astute harness trainer Gary Hall Snr.

"After four years of learning from the best in harness, the time came to go out and have a crack,

"I was behind the scenes of a lot of good horses, mainly Im Victorious NZ, who will always be my favourite and the horse I will always be in awe of.

Im Victorious NZ took out the 2012 Gr1 WA Derby, Gr1 Golden Nugget, and in 2014 the Gr1 Fremantle Cup, with a career ending injury seeing the then five-year-old retire after just 34 starts and over $752,000 in stakes.

Making her debut to training in 2022, Lara now trains from Serpentine, but the journey to her first win has been on that is far from smooth sailing.

"Life happened and it was time to train on my own,

"With the support of my family, friends, the harness industry and with Snr's and Jnr's help and somewhere to train from, I began with Rocknroll Ralph, a family horse who had previously been retried,

"He was going along really good until a small hole appeared in his tendon, scans showed he had a tendon injury previously that was not detected but had healed."

The decision was made to send him back to the paddock, where he spent plenty of time resting before eventually making his return in March this year, winning his two trials at Pinjarra, placing now at four of his five attempts, before getting the win on Monday for the ecstatic, and incredibly anxious mother and daughter duo, Ash and Lara Brennan.

Brennan then had the opportunity to take on Freyja through Sonia Maher, where she trialled impressively in July, finishing 8.1m behind WA bred poster boy Handsandwheels at Pinjarra.

"Just before she was supposed to race, she stumbled coming off the track and stretched her tendon,

"I was devastated, and to be honest, wanted to give it up."

Rocknroll Ralph eventually made his way back to training, but it wasn't without its obstacles, with his manners and gait often questionable, Brennan turned to her peers for advice.

"Ralph is not a beginner's horse, so patience was needed as he only knew one speed,

"Without Jnr's patience, I don't think we would have got this far, he is quite revvy and then the issue of galloping came up.

After speaking with Ralphs previous trainer, Kyle Harper, Brennan altered his gear a little and has been on his best behaviour since.

"Ralph has been really good for me as I have learned so much about training since having him,

"I now have a two in work, a really nice mare who is a couple of weeks off trialling."
