Training Double a First for Tommy Sheehy

Tommy Sheehy has been in the industry for as long as he can remember, and Sunday at Bridgetown was a memorable one for him, with the 54-year-old certain it was his first training double.

"I think I've only ever driven a double, maybe a treble, but not trained a double."

With just the two runners engaged on Sunday at the opening meeting at Bridgetown, it doesn't get any better than saluting with both, with recent acquisition Road Closure getting the win in race three, and Trunkey Fetch brining up his second win for the stable in just 6 starts.

"To be honest, Trunkey Fetch was expected to win, the other horse had a bit of luck with a couple of scratchings, I have a bit of time for him, and he went .8 of a second outside of the track record.

"I was very happy; I think he's on the way up. He's been working very well."

"We've always been heavily involved, looking forward I've got a fair few people I've met at the club that are real good people and their first-time horse owners with the horses they've got involved in, the pair of them. So, they're over the moon."

Born into a horse family, there was never any doubt that Tommy Sheehy would someday be involved himself, but once his children were in the picture and he was raising them on his own, he took a step back from training and took up shoeing full time to support his young family.

"I'm part of the Millers, Neasham's and Reegan's clan and we go back to Johnny Miller, who won the Melbourne Cup, he's dads first cousin, and we were brought up in it.

"I was always born to do that, and shoe, I wasn't any good at anything else, I think I got a second wind in life now that I'm just doing the training and Jacks doing the shoeing."

Sheehy, a successful junior driver, represented WA with Kellie Kersley at the time in Sydney, experiencing his fair share of success, working in stables of the likes of Lance Justice and Greg Harper before getting married and having three children, Kristy, Kasey and Jack, who have all had involvement in harness racing in one way or another.

"I started shoeing (as a young man), I always had an interest, shoeing for Olivieri (Ross) for 10 years, we had a bit of Luck, Me and Jack with Black Cardinal along the way, it's really been me and him.

"Kristy had a lot of luck, as you know.

"and Kasey drove in pony trots, she was very successful but wasn't confident, and I think she had one trial drive."

Sheehy currently has just the three in work, with Sunnie Beach having her first start this Friday at Narrogin for the stable.

"I like her a lot, we bought her because she's worth it for a broodmare, but at the end of the day we like her and there's a bit of upside to her and I think we're going to have some fun with her.

"We are just lucky enough to pick up a couple of horses that we think we can have fun with."

Sheehy has taken a step back from shoeing now, with Jack taking over, concentrating on training his small team.

"Shoeing took priority whilst the kids were growing up, and now I'm really enjoying the training and getting to the trots, I love getting to the outside meetings, it's a good atmosphere."

When asked what's next, Sheehy remarked "I'm looking for a sheila who likes horses and a nice bloke."

Sheehy has his team nominated for Narrogin's meeting this Friday night.
