JRA Best Bets - Sunday, 5th February 2023

Very even racing across the three JRA cards on Sunday and two very good feature events. At Tokyo is the Grade 3 Shimbun Hai over a mile, which sees the return of Grade 2 winner Namur who loves racing while fresh. At Chukyo is a terrific contest for the three-year-olds in the Grade 3 Kisaragi Sho over 2000m with a host of promising youngsters engaged.

Our Best Bets for Sunday

Chukyo Dirt Race 7 - #2 Vintage Road

Lightly raced four-year-old resuming. Finished off last campaign at this course and distance and in similar grade, where he stalked the pace and ran away with an effortless win. That was first success from five runs but the penny may have dropped now. Resumes in a similar race and leading rider engaged for his return. Can take up where he left off.

Kazu Kapolei also resumes and looks the biggest threat. Raced over a number of different distances last time in but stepped up to this journey at final run before a break and ran a top race to just miss. Best form is clearly over this trip and will be primed for a big return.

Chukyo Race 11 - #2 Hrimfaxi

Talented colt in top form. Was placed on debut then got off the mark with an effortless maiden win. He stepped up a notch last time and was again too good, scoring with plenty in hand and prompting the jumps to stakes class. A son of Rulership and a half brother to dual Grade 1 winner Deirdre, he looks to have good upside and although yet to tackle this class his figures stack up strongly against today's rivals. He is worth following up.

Open Fire went to the paddock after a strong run and looks a big threat. He was a strong debut winner before placing in Listed grade and will no doubt have benefited from the break. Another with good upside he can return with a big run today.

Kokura Race 11 - #13 Deep Monster

Lightly raced son of Deep Impact who returns from a break. Has spent much of his career in better grade, including some solid runs in Grade 1 company. Although he hasn't won for almost two years, the talented entire has been sparingly raced. Two back he was runner-up over 2600m at the only run of the campaign then again last time in he raced just once, when runner-up over 2000m in Listed grade.

He looks well placed today over a similar journey and is definitely up to this grade. He'll sit off the pace and should be winding up strongly in the run home.

Big Ribbon was an impressive fresh-up winner and its hard to knock the winning form. This is a tougher assignment but he can only be fitter and appeals as a big danger again.

Tokyo Race 11 - #15 Namur

The Grade 3 feature brings together an outstanding field of milers, but this filly's recent efforts at racing's elite level stand out.

The four-year-old is back from a 12-week spell. Last time in work she raced just twice, opening the prep with a barnstorming second in the Grade 1 Shuka Sho over 2000m at Hanshin. Four weeks later trainer Tomokazu Takano sent her around in the Queen Elizabeth II Cup, a prestigious 2200m contest at Hanshin. She was shuffled back to the second half of the field on straightening that day before winding up nicely to finish fifth.

The mile when fresh is her favoured scenario, with all three of the filly's wins coming at 1600m when returning from a spell. Regular rider Takeshi Yokoyama is aboard, and he is on fire at present with 12 winners from his last 50 rides. A wide gate should not stop this outstanding daughter of Harbinger from adding to her fine record.

Justin Cafe returns from an 11-week break and is at his best at this stage of the campaign, with three wins and two minor placings from five runs. He opened last prep with a close second at Grade 2 level, so he certainly has the class to test this line-up.
