Bestseller makes the most of light weight

Bestseller sprinted home strongly under a postage-stamp weight from apprentice jockey Rozlan Nazam to open his account on Monday.

Jumping on terms from barrier three, the three-year-old son of Dream Ahead camped outside stablemate and $12 favourite Hole In One (A'Isisuhairi Kasim) as the latter led on the rails in the $75,000 Novice race (1200m).

Last-start winner Petrograd (Simon Kok Wei Hoong), however, decided that the pace was not to his liking and surged to the front out wide as the field turned for home.

Rozlan kept his cool aboard Bestseller ($30) until the 400m when he released the handbrakes on him. With Petrograd tiring on the inside and Hole In One not making up ground, Bestseller took flight in the final 150m and finished one-and-three-quarters length ahead of Hole In One.

Kick (Manoel Nunes) was nosed out into third. The winning time was 1min 10.36secs for the 1200m on the Long Course.

While the featherweight load of 47.5kgs was a contributing factor to Bestseller 's first win, winning trainer Ricardo Le Grange had more people to thank for the success, aside from his four-kilo claiming apprentice jockey.

"I have to thank (chief starter) John Pepe, (assistant starters) Sebastien (Poupard) and Ronnie (Ronedin Osman) for working and educating him together," said the South African of his winner on the second day of Chinese New Year.

"Last year, I thought he was above himself mentally, so during the season break, we took him out to the gates four times.

"John did a lot of work on him like putting the blanket and the blindfold on him. Now, he (Bestseller) is much more settled.

"Then on Wednesday morning, he jumped out of the gates and as he was pulling up, a crow took off and he landed on the fence and slit his chest open.

"My nerves were shot. I have to thank (assistant-trainer) Jacci (de Tert), (stable supervisor) Michelle (Mok) and the boys at the stables for doing an amazing job to get him to the races today.

"If I can keep his head right, he will be a nice horse.

"As for Hole In One, I think he can improve with the run today and he is looking for a 1400m or a 1600m (race). I have lost no hope in that he's a good horse."

Rozlan, who booted home his first career win on Great Command on January 14, thought the key to winning was to get the Australian gelding to settle in the race.

"He was pressured after jumping out of the gates at his last start, so this time, Ricardo told me to just let him relax and jump freely," said the Singaporean rider.

"It all depended on my stablemate (Hole In One) too. When one of us goes in front, the other one can take a sit.

"He (Bestseller) is much more relaxed today. The light weight and the inside barrier also helped him."

With that first win and one third in four starts, Bestseller has earned more than $55,000 in prizemoney for Leonardo Javier, who is also the owner of the runner-up, Hole In One.
