We're now deep into the Spring Carnival, and to be pessimistic, you can see the finish line in the distance, until The Pinnacles at Ascot and the final of the 55 second challenge come around to spark some more excitement.
Nevertheless, one of the best days in racing took place on Saturday, even if Derby Day dwindles decade by decade, allowing Champions (Stakes) Day to flourish this week.
Secret's out- Coolmore winner very good
In Secret was easily the highlight of Derby Day, winning the Coolmore in dominant fashion and posting a strong rating with Timeform of 120, a new peak up from 114 when nosed out in the Golden Rose.
I said after the Run To The Rose that In Secret looked a bit brilliant to extend to a mile of the Flight or Thousand Guineas, and it seems as if sprinting will be her forte. McDonald, who is right on track to break last year's record of 10 Cup week winners, got her into the perfect spot midfield and she exploded late.
Despite the Coolmore being a 'stallion making race', fillies have won three of the last five editions, and of those three- In Secret, September Run and Sunlight, In Secret clearly sits on top.
September Run and Sunlight both rated 116 winning their year and both have gone on to win at least one more Group 1 which reads very well for In Secret.
Compared to the colts in the last five years however, In Secret has a bit to find.
Exceedance and Home Affairs both rated through the roof in their wins, posting figures of 125 with Timeform, and Merchant Navy's 120+ said he had the ability to rate better, which he did when winning the Diamond Jubilee at Royal Ascot.
Exceedance never went on with the job but Bivouac could count himself a touch unlucky not to have won, conditions on the day turning the tables from the Run To The Rose and the Golden Rose.
Put simply, the Coolmore is a good race to win. If I were to compare In Secret to another filly to have won the race- Gold Edition in 2006 comes to mind. Beaten in the Golden Rose as a $3.50 chance after winning a lead up in dominant fashion, she won the Coolmore (then known as the Ascot Vale Stakes) by 4 lengths, rating 122 with Timeform.
Gold Edition would go on to win the Magic Millions 3yo by 4 lengths in the Summer, the Surround Stakes by 3 lengths and run a fighting 0.3L second to star sprinter Miss Andretti in a Newmarket. She then ran a 0.5L second to Takeover Target in a Doomben 10,000, second in a Stradbroke, and would come back at four to win a Manikato and again run second to Miss Andretti in a VRC Sprint (The Age Classic).
With the sprinting ranks in Australia slowly starting to change after years of Nature Strip beating Eduardo, we have plenty to look forward to.
Giga Kick rated 124 winning The Everest, and in a brilliant stroke of fortune for racing fans, he's a gelding who didn't bother with the Coolmore and its stallion making nature, instead putting his win on the line this Saturday against Nature Strip again in the Champion's Sprint.
In Secret and Giga Kick haven't met, but it seems only a matter of time until they do. The Newmarket would have to be on the radar of both runners come the Autumn, and so while we can see the end of the Spring Carnival, there's always something to look forward to.
