Wet track the concern for Clarken duo

A heavy surface is the big worry for Strathalbyn trainer Andrew Clarken who takes two leading chances to Gawler today.

Clarken has Baby Alex back at the races while talented staying mare So Bene will try and build on her record out in distance later in the day.

Clarken said Baby Alex was a horse who had always shown talent, evident with her impressive win at Murray Bridge on debut but seeing a heavy track under race pressure was a concern.

"She's always showed us above average ability,'' Clarken said on RadioTAB.

"We needed to find the right race to win first-up, she was a bit green and took a while, but in the end has started to develop and we thought she'd be hard to beat at Murray Bridge.

"(She is) tried on no worse than a Soft 6. She works on similar ground and gets through it, but that would be my only question mark.

"I'm happy with the way she's going, but a Heavy 10 is a different story. If she does handle wet ground that give us options going forward,'' he said.

So Bene is a talented stayer who Clarken is hoping can build on her record having won just one of 18 starts but has been placed on seven occasions.

"She's a little bit of a question mark in the ground too,'' Clarken said.

"I was hoping for better tracks, but you can't predict the weather.

"We're targeting a race like the Jericho (Cup),'' he said.
