It is run on a straight course up the back straight at Longchamp and run in the opposite direction of the course.

The Prix de l'Abbaye de Longchamp has always been at 1000m and was a Group 2 when grading starting before becoming a Group 1 in 1976. Geldings were allowed from 2001.

In 2008, Eastern European sprinter Overdose won the Abbaye but there was a false start and the race was voided due to a non-opening gate. He did not participate in the re-run at the end of the day won by Marchand d'Or.

Four horses have won the race twice – Texanita, Gentilhombre, Committed, Lochsong.
