2022 GLOAMING STAKES - RACE HISTORY AND BACKGROUND

The Gloaming Stakes is a Group 3 race run under Set Weights conditions for three year olds conducted by the Australian Turf Club.

The Gloaming Stakes is run over 1800m. It was first run in 1978 and was won by Kapalaran.

The Gloaming Stakes was run over 1900m until 2000 then most runnings since have been at 1800m as a lead up to the Spring Champion Stakes.

In 2022 it was moved to Randwick, upped in prizemoney as the lead up to the later run Spring Champion.

Race was elevated to Group 2 until 2004 then back to Group 3 after that.

The race is named after a grand horse Gloaming who had 19 wins in a row at one time and won 57 from 67 starts on both sides of the Tasman.

Ace High won the Gloaming before taking the Spring Champion Stakes and Victoria Derby at his next two outings.

Others to do the Gloaming/Spring Champion double include Shadow Hero, Vanbrugh, Complacent, Dundeel, Fairway, Tie The Knot, Magic Of Sydney, Sir Dapper, Best Western and Kingston Town.

The only filly winner has been Constant Flight.

The 2007 race was not held due to the Equine Influenza break out.
