Catania back in the saddle under lights

One of Tasmania’s most popular jockeys, Georgie Catania, resumes race riding at the first night meeting of the season in Launceston on Wednesday night following a lengthy break caused from a race fall in Devonport over four months ago.

Georgie Catania has taken three rides for her return, and all are from the Brunton-Keys yard at Seven Mile Beach where she does most of her trackwork riding.

She suffered a fractured shoulder blade that required natural healing, but it was the blow to her head that rendered her unconscious that required the most rehabilitation.

"The doctors weren't overly concerned with the shoulder injury because they said that would heal fairly quickly, but my concussion was severe and that's why I have been out for so long," Catania said.

"I had a big dent in my head where the horse rolled on me, and had it not been for my helmet I would have been in some strife.

"I have had all the required concussion tests and have passed them without a hitch, and I have been riding plenty of trackwork to get fit, so It is all systems go for Wednesday night and I can hardly wait."

Catania will ride the Scott Brunton-trained first starter Ole Ola in the Ladbrokes 1200-metre maiden (race two) and she believes the filly is not without a chance to run money.

"Ole Ola is ready for her debut, but she does a few things wrong, and this will probably be more of an educational run, but she has the ability to cause an upset."

She is no stranger to the Keys-trained So Astounding, aboard whom she won the St Leger over 2400m in Launceston in March.

"So Astounding goes into this race second-up and while it might appear too short for him (1400m), he has drawn to get a nice run (barrier three) just behind the leaders and if he gets that run, he could make his presence felt at the business end."

Catania's other ride on the eight-event card is aboard Brunton's mare Stelladoni that hasn't won for 18 months, and Catania was aboard that day in Launceston in a benchmark 66 over 1600m.

"Stelladoni can mix her form a bit but her past two starts have been on the synthetic and she will be much better suited on the grass."
