Robb Ready To Raise The Bar On Morgenstern (Warren Sunday)

Trainer Brett Robb’s view of emerging sprinter Morgenstern goes on the line to a degree when the in-form gelding tackles open company for the first time at Warren on Sunday.

The five-year-old has had four starts for the Dubbo trainer for three wins and a narrow second and after shouldering 59.5kg in his second-up win he steps up in class into the B & D Brouff Earthmoving Warren Jockey Club Sprint (1200m).

Morgenstern, $4.20 with TAB on Saturday, enhanced Brett Robb's opinion when he clocked a slick 1:08.80 in his last start win at Coonamble just over a week ago.

"I think he's a pretty good horse and well find out how good he is against the open class sprinters,'' he said.

"He's going to have to bring his A-game but I definitely think he's up to them.

"That's where his benchmark is now and he's going to find it harder than his last two races but I liked the way he did it at Coonamble. He was entitled to get beaten.

"He had a bit of ground to make up and on a track where they weren't making much ground, he flew past them like they'd stopped."

A 4kg drop in weight helps compensate for the rise in class and Robb's main concern is whether he'll find another 1200m race too sharp after two runs back – prior to joining Robb the gelding had been tried up to 2000m.

He has a healthy respect for some quality opposition including Seguso, a former Victorian now with the Cody Morgan stable, and proven country performers like Westlink and Activation.

"He might be looking for 1300-1400m, maybe now or the next start. But Warren is a big track, he should be close enough to them,'' he said.

"He likes races where there is a fair bit of speed on and gets over the top of them late."

Robb has three engaged in the feature $37,000 QUBE Logistics Cotton Cup (1600m) and he says the track conditions could sort out the chances of his trio A Magic Zariz, Great Buy and All Words.

Of them, he said it's Great Buy who has been prepared specifically for this race but he wants the track to continue to improve to produce his best.

He's been just behind the placings in races won by stablemates Dalavin, on a soft track at Dubbo, and Morgenstern, on good ground at Coonamble, at his past couple of starts.

"I've been setting him for this race for ages, I've been dying for a firmer track,'' Robb said.

"He loves being on top of the ground. If it's least a soft 6 he'll run well, there is a good race in him because he's going well now."

Ten-year-old warhorse A Magic Zariz has to concede over 5kg to the entire field even after apprentice Shayleigh Ingelse's claim but Robb said if he can run up to his third in the Coonamble Cup (run at Dubbo) behind Caesars Palace he'd be a chance.

"He's pretty easy to ride, he jumps and he tries but you do have to ride him along a bit,'' he said.

"He gets through the wet but he doesn't like a bog track and the other day at Wagga it looked to be bottomless."

All Words is coming off an uncharacteristic failure at Newcastle last weekend but Robb says a soft barrier is a big advantage though concedes he can be a bit hit and miss as his record would illustrate.

"He drew wide and you've either got to go right forward or right back and we went forward,'' he said.

"I don't think that's his go, he sat outside the leader and threw the towel in pretty quick. That's not him, he usually shows a bit of ticker. I'll ride him with a bit of cover this time and hopefully he goes a bit better."
