Pepper hopes to beat favourite with Zounique (Tamworth, Tuesday)

The contingency plan was automatic when injuries prevented the retention of winning rider Anna Roper for tough gelding Zounique ($12 on TAB) at enticing odds for Tuesday’s Tamworth TAB meeting in preference to Friday’s Mudgee Cup.

The rising Wyong apprentice suffered knee, hip and back injuries in a race fall at Muswellbrook on Friday.

Her agent Craig Rixon reported she is out hospital but with a knee in a brace and on crutches, so the former champion junior equestrian won't be riding in the immediate future.

And the strongest possible pointer for Zounique is Scone trainer Luke Pepper electing for Tamworth instead of Country Cups quality in the Mudgee feature, a qualifier for the Big Dance.

And also securing a replacement jockey who knows the six-year-old well enough.

Luke has booked Mitchell Bell who was placed in town on Zounique as the late alternative with 59kg second-up for the Tamworth Elite Sand & Soil Open Hcp, 1600m.

The Kris Lees-trained city grader Juventus is a short-priced $2.80 favourite. Coincidentally, Bell was already committed to Tamworth with several prime rides.

"Getting up in the weights we'd intended to take advantage of Anna's claim as she rated him perfect claiming 3kg to win last prep at Newcastle," Luke explained.

"We had no luck at all first-up short of his best distance at Hawkesbury. Mitch rode him when he was placed on the Kensington Track last prep."

Meanwhile, replacement riders had to be found for three more of Anna's rides aside from Zounique who has won four races for Pepper and numerous placings.

"Been so good to me, bomb proof, genuine and tough. We're looking forward to this prep and back to country level."

Zounique finished close-up at the Kensington and Canterbury Park tracks in solid mid-week form races.

The gelding was originally moved on from the Victorian stables of Tom Dabernig with dual wins and has been a super money spinner for Pepper who has relocated from Canberra to Scone.

And of course, enjoyed a career defining occasion when his star filly Opal Ridge won the $500,000 Tapp-Craig feature.

"She's still spelling and will be back in work in a few more weeks - exciting."

Typically Lees will provide several Tamworth favourites and also at Mudgee for a highly anticipated Big Dance qualifier.

Tamworth will race on a Good 4 track in fine weather.
