When Victorian trainers Leon and Troy Corstens were considering lodging an entry for the Schweppes Tasmanian Derby, their lightly raced three-year-old Abrupt wasn't even on the radar.

He won a maiden at Stony Creek over 1700 metres in late December but it wasn't until he produced an eye-catching fifth at Kilmore late last month that they decided to consider a trip to Tasmania.

When nominations closed last Friday the well-bred gelding wasn't among the group of only seven entries which led to nominations being extended.

A lot can happen in the space of two days and that's when the team decided to lodge a late nomination and subsequently accepted for the race on Tuesday.

He arrived safe and sound on Wednesday and he and travelling trackwork rider Jasmine Coleman spent Thursday acclimatising and enjoying the fresh pine-tree infused air at Seven Mile Beach to prepare for the gelding's big day out in Hobart on Friday afternoon.

"I couldn't be happier with how the horse travelled and while he lacks experience, he should be very competitive and he doesn't know he is considered an outsider," said Coleman.

Dunkel is the favourite at $1.30 following impressive wins at his past two starts while Abrupt is a $26 in the latest market.

The Derby is race five on the eight-race card on Friday and it is scheduled to start at 17:47 on what is a twilight program starting at 15:17.
