Townsville apprentice grabs maiden TAB winner

Townsville apprentice jockey Jenna Edwards ticked a box on her career bucket list when she landed her first winner at a TAB meeting at Mackay on Tuesday.

The 24-year-old Edwards notched up her ninth winner when she landed Test Of War for veteran Clermont trainer John Heelan in a Benchmark 58 Handicap over 1200 metres.

"That puts me one win closer to my target of getting my provincial licence before the end of this season," she said.

"I'm almost halfway there now and I've got my sights set on maybe being able to ride at places like Cluden Park and Rockhampton during the upcoming winter carnivals.

"Actually I have already ridden once at Townsville when a Bowen meeting was transferred there early this month.

"It was a lot different to the early days when I was learning my craft on the dirt tracks of the likes of Pentland and Mount Isa.

"I can ride at TAB meetings at Mackay and Cairns because they are classed as country."

Edwards began her race riding career in 2021 after a frustrating few years trying to gain a break into the racing game.

She finally got her wish when she became apprenticed to Townsville jockey-trainer Carl Spry and his trainer wife Sarah Acornley.

She had her first race ride at Ewan.

Edwards quickly showed potential when she won a double at Pentland, including the 2021 Pentland Cup on Three Phase for Townsville trainer Georgie Holt.

She also has ridden doubles twice at Mount Isa and a Home Hill winner for Holt.

Edwards' indentures were transferred to Holt in July last year and despite riding track work, trials and jump outs, she had a break from race riding until October.

"I'm still learning a lot about race riding and have received a lot of good advice from leading jockey Nathan Day, who has been helping me hone my skills and teaching me about reading races," she said.

"I'm enjoying life at the moment but constantly exercising and keeping my weight under control."

Edwards rides comfortably at 55 kilograms and was able to claim her full three kilograms on Test Of War on Tuesday.

Her next rides will be on Saturday at Home Hill.
