2023 MAGIC NIGHT STAKES - RACE HISTORY AND BACKGROUND

The Magic Night Stakes is a Group 3 race for two-year-old fillies conducted by the Australian Turf Club as one of the final lead-up races to the Golden Slipper.

The Magic Night Stakes was first run in 1975 and is traditionally run a week before the Golden Slipper, the world's richest two-year-old race. The Magic Night Stakes winner is exempt from ballot for the Golden Slipper.

The Magic Night Stakes will be run over 1200m.

The Magic Night Stakes is named after the 2YO filly who won the Golden Slipper Stakes in 1961.

Since its inception the Magic Night Stakes has been run over 1200m. From 1975 to 1977 the race was known as the Magic Night Quality and was open to both sexes under quality handicap conditions.

From 1978 to 1984 the Magic Night Quality was for fillies only. Since 1985 all fillies have carried 55.5kg in the Magic Night Stakes.

The Magic Night Stakes became a Listed Race in 1979, a Group 3 race in 1980 and was promoted to Group 2 status in 1986. In 2017 it was back as a G3.

The Magic Night Stakes has been run every year at Rosehill. In 2016 the race was named the Bede Murray Magic Night Stakes as a tribute to the leading trainer who died that week. Bede Murray trained the 2002 Magic Night Stakes winner Victory Vein.

The Magic Night Stakes/Golden Slipper Stakes double has been won six times by Toy Show (1975), Century Miss (1979), Dark Eclipse (1980), Bounding Away (1986), Bint Marscay (1993) and Kiamichi (2019).

The Magic Night Stakes/ATC Sires' Produce Stakes double has been won three times (Toy Show, Comely Girl, Victory Vein) and the Magic Night Stakes/Champagne Stakes double four times by Lady Eclipse, Bounding Away, Victory Vein and She's Extreme.

Kiamichi won in 2019 and backed up a week later to win at similarly good odds in the Golden Slipper.

The 2023 Magic Night Stakes had $200,000 in prizemoney.

Other notable winners of the Magic Night Stakes include Ma Chiquita, Tennessee Vain, Klokka, Pontal Lass, Regal Chamber, Preserve, Hosannah, Shamekha, Media, Gold Edition, Bring Me The Maid, Speak Fondly, Tulip, Sunlight, Kiamichi and She's Extreme.

The 2022 Magic Night Stakes was won by She's Extreme from Magic Carpet and Swift Sweet.
