The race is named after Australian Racing Hall of Fame member Maurice McCarten, one of Sydney racing's greatest jockeys and trainers who died in 1971, but has carried many different sponsor names since its inception in 1988.

The Maurice McCarten Stakes was first run over 1200m from 1988 until 2009.

Since 2010 the Maurice McCarten Stakes has been run over 1100m under quality handicap conditions with a maximum topweight of 61kg.
