Frost and snow warnings ahead of midweek racing

As temperatures across Britain sink below zero due to the arrival of an Arctic cold front, race meetings at Newcastle, Catterick and Carlisle are facing a race against time to go ahead.

Newcastle's jumps fixture is currently scheduled for Tuesday, with the officials expecting to inspect the course at 8am, however, with temperatures predicted to reach as low as -5C, racegoers may be disappointed.

The BHA has agreed to a request from Jockey Club Racecourses to bring forward the start time of Kempton's card on Wednesday to 3.05 in an attempt to beat the snowfall forecast. Similarly, precautionary measures have been put in place at Carlisle ahead of Thursday's meeting, with frost sheets installed on the take-off and landing sides on both the hurdle and chase courses.

At Newcastle, the whole course has been covered since last Friday, however, temperatures are not anticipated to rise above zero before 10am on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Fontwell has taken similar precautionary measures but there is no such concern for Grand Military Gold Cup meeting at Sandown on Tuesday.

With temperatures falling below sub-zero on both Tuesday and Wednesday, racegoers at the three venues are keeping their fingers crossed in the hope that each race goes ahead as scheduled.
