Comeback ‘kids’ return in Launceston

Tassie riding ranks receive a boost.

The Tasmanian riding ranks have received a boost with two jockeys at the opposite end of their careers making comebacks at Wednesday night's meeting in Launceston.

Kelvin Sanderson, aka 'the iceman' will return after more than seven years absence while apprentice Taylah Stalker is back after being out of the saddle for 11 months.

The pair have been active at recent trial meetings.

Sanderson could make a winning return, riding Myocardium in the first event, the Kerry Leighton Maiden (1200m). Myocardium showed blistering pace to lead and run second at the track a fortnight ago and looks ideally drawn in barrier three.

That was his first run for trainer Barry Campbell and the 4YO should have benefited from the hit out.

Stalker, who is now apprenticed to Glenn Stevenson, will have her comeback ride on Wolf Reign in the second on the card, the Natalie Waters BM62 (1200m).

While Sanderson has ridden more than 500 winners, including the 1992 Launceston Cup on Star Cheers, Stalker has ridden seven winners from less than 100 rides.

Grey goes for two in a week

In-form mare Romary will be aiming to make it three-in-a-row when she lines up in the Peter Scott BM76 (1400m).

A winner of eight races since joining the John Luttrell stable, Romary has been impressive at her past two outings, winning in Hobart and Launceston, both those wins have been over her pet distance of 1600m, but on Wednesday night she drops back to 1400m.

"I don't think it will be a problem, she's had an easy week since she won the other night, she's eaten up well and came of the track well this morning (Tuesday) and she's really in good order," trainer John Luttrell said.

After Wednesday night's run Romary could have her next start in Melbourne.

"We were nearly going to take her over this week, we had her nominated for a race over there but decided to give her one more run, that's only about her third run back from a good spell and if everything goes right, we will probably take her over."

Another from the Luttrell camp trying for a hat-trick of wins is Steel Mist who lines up in race 2.

Looking for a best bet, I thought Miss Charlie Brown could back-up from her outstanding run in the Launceston Cup and win the $50,000 Sporties Hotel Tasmanian St Leger.

The first of nine races is scheduled at 17.29, with Duncan Dornauf hosting all the action on TasracingTV.
