Derby winner out to add Guineas crown

Manzoice can become just the fourth horse in half a century to win the Victoria Derby-Rosehill Guineas double.

Manzoice will join a select group of horses if he can add the Rosehill Guineas to his Victoria Derby triumph.

Only a trio of three-year-olds in the past 50 years have captured both classics – Dulcify in 1978-79, Helenus in 2002-03 and Tarzino in 2015-16 - and if Manzoice is to join them, he will need to do so off an interrupted preparation.

The colt missed his scheduled first-up start in the Hobartville Stakes (1400m) due to an elevated temperature and was naturally behind the eight-ball when resuming in the Randwick Guineas (1600m).

While the circumstances weren't ideal, trainer Chris Waller saw merit in the horse's eighth placing with Manzoice settling last and catching the eye with his powerful late finish.

"Missing that first-up run, it makes you reluctant to run them first-up over a mile but I was happy with what he did for a stayer," Waller said.

"His work since has been great and he'll love 2000-metres.

"Each year in the Rosehill Guineas we see the formlines change from the Randwick Guineas to the 2000-metre distance."

Stablemate Lindermann will also line up in his home track Guineas after running the race of his life when second to Communist in the Randwick equivalent.

While Saturday's race will be the colt's first time over the journey, Waller says Lindermann's effort to finish second in a stakes race at Flemington last spring has given him cause to believe he will appreciate a middle-distance.

"I took a lot of heart out of his 1800-metre race at Flemington during Cup week last year," Waller said.

"He was three-wide that day and kept coming. He was a baby then and he's a man now and he gets his opportunity."

Waller is chasing his third Rosehill Guineas (2000m) after victories with D'Argento (2018) and The Autumn Sun (2019) and his pair for Saturday's renewal are both in the market with Lindermann at $6.50 and Manzoice into $9.50 after opening $11.

Godolphin's Pericles is a clear-cut $2.60 favourite and comes to Sydney after winning the Group 2 Autumn Classic (1800m) at Sandown last start.
