Frankie Dettori’s World Pool blog: Lockinge hope Laurel looks magnificent

Friday 19th May 2023 – It’s been a good start to my last ever UK Flat season, with wins in the 2000 Guineas, Chester Vase and Musidora.

CHALDEAN was brilliant at Newmarket and it really was a dream come true to win that race for the final time. I spoke to Andrew [Balding] the other day and I think they're targeting the St James's Palace at Royal Ascot now, so fingers crossed everything goes to plan between now and then.

As for Chester Vase winner ARREST, I think the Derby at Epsom is very much on his agenda at the moment.

Newbury, Saturday (20th May)

I'm looking forward to the first ever World Pool races at Newbury, starting off in the London Gold Cup (3:00pm) with LOYAL TOUCH for Charlie Johnston.

The opening bend over the 1m2f/2000m trip comes up quite quickly, so you want to get a nice early position. Hopefully I can break well from stall nine.

When you look back through the horses that have won this, like Time Test, Cannock Chase and Bay Bridge, it's clear that it usually takes a proper horse to win it.

I don't know too much about my ride – obviously he won nicely at Carlisle on his third start, as well as at Kempton last time out – but he'll need to be almost a Group horse to win this.

I'm really looking forward to the Lockinge (3:35pm) with LAUREL.

I went to see her a few days ago and she looked magnificent. I thought her win at Kempton was very good, but obviously this is a big step up.

She's now got to take on the likes of Modern Games, who's a four-time G1 winner, and is ultra-consistent, so she's certainly got a lot to prove. He's the one we've all got to get past, but my filly is certainly improving and we're hopeful of a big run.
