Sydney Specials: Randwick – 1st October 2022

While the optimists will be hoping the rain misses Randwick, I’m ready for the swamp to return.

A real shame as I feel this is one of the best days of the year with the babies kicking off and the two feature Group 1 handicaps.

This day also plays hosts to Sydney's best sprinters (barring Nature Strip/Eduardo) with the Group 2 Premiere Stakes, whoever wins likely starts second pick in The Everest.

The Epsom is one of my favourite races every year and while only a small field this year, I don't think it detracts too much from what should be a great race.

Since 2000, 63 horses have run in the Epsom off the George Main Stakes for seven winners (bang in line with market expectation).

Icebath and Hinged ran second/third and have obvious claims under the handicap conditions.

Hinged notably beat home Icebath first up in the Winx Stakes before finishing half a length behind her last start.

Now meets her 2.5kg better off and is this year's 'weight' horse. Should land outside the lead and certainly gets her chance.

Icebath has won close to half of her career prizemoney on heavy tracks but possesses just the one win (Bm78) to her name over the Randwick mile, admittedly she has placed in two Doncasters, a Queen Of The Turf and a George Main.

That being said Nimalee beat her home in the Queen Of The Turf and meets her 2kg better off having finished just 0.6L behind her in the Tramway two back - the gap between them is too big.

All three tie in together fairly closely leaving Top Ranked with the different form.

15 Bill Ritchie winners have run in the Epsom since 2000 with three successful (Probabeel, Kolding and Boban), the market expected 1.5.

Love finding horses at the top of the handicap that rate well and he ticks that box this year.

Bowman sticks, perfect draw and handles the conditions – have him marked favourite and the one to beat.

Team Snowden will have no concerns with the prospect of the swamp returning with their gun sprinter Mazu well placed on Saturday.

Finished behind Lost And Running first up but did concede him 2kg and the pacifiers notably go back on.

Doesn't boast the peak ratings of Lost and Running but the prospect of a heavy track swings the race back in his favour.

Drawn to land in the coffin and while I haven't go him marked favourite, I do have the pair closer together.
