Ratings guru Gary Crispe says Dunaden can shoulder a 1kg penalty and win his second Melbourne Cup.

Racing Victoria chief handicapper Greg Carpenter today is expected to give the Caulfield Cup winner a penalty that will take his Melbourne Cup weight to 59kg.

No horse since Rain Lover, who carried 60.5kg in 1969, has lumped such a weight to Cup victory.

"It's a tough ask but I certainly think he can (win),'' Crispe said.
