2023 AFL Round 8 Preview – COLLINGWOOD v SYDNEY

Racing and Sports will provide analysis of many games in the 2023 AFL Season.

We'll endeavour to run through the form, incorporate appropriate stats and also supply a betting prediction which won't always just be who will win.

COLLINGWOOD v SYDNEY

Sunday 7 May @ MCG

Last season these two met in critical games and they went the same way. It is hard to see that being replicated on 2023 form lines.

Sydney took on the Pies at the SCG in a R22 clash which clinched the Swans a Top 4 spot. They were very good for that 27 point win.

A month later they met in a famous Preliminary Final and it was 1 point and one punch from Callum Mills in a pack marking contest which saw the Bloods home.

We all know what has happened since then as Collingwood don't know how to lose and Sydney has struggled to know how to win.

What was Leigh Matthews use of the Predator quote to inspire the Lions. "If it bleeds, we can kill it." Well you need to do even more than that to see off the Magpies right now. They need to be inside a coffin and even then like the Undertaker in the WWE they could come back.

Adelaide had ample opportunities to nail that coffin shut with poor kicking the reason but once you give them a hope they know what needs to be done and how to do it.

They even did it without Scott Pendlebury leading the charge though Darcy Moore leads in every way. They also did it this time without Nick Daicos dominating.

Well last year Sydney was basically the only side who held him well. Ryan Clarke was brilliant twice in holding his influence with a great tag. He is now back and gaining fitness so you have to think he goes there.

But no matter how well he plays, twice now the Swans have lost games at home they should have won and they know that.

The Port Adelaide game was annoying, the GWS one was worse. Four goals up and holding sway, they didn't know how to roll the clock away. That is not helped with Rampe and McCartin being out and Fox joining them.

But the midfield has to be on fire and realistically they haven't been in 2022 form. That is returnable but doubt it happens against Collingwood.

Interestingly the last time Collingwood met Sydney at the MCG was way back in 2013 and that was a very famous game which now lives in infamy. Its meaning still has great significance today. Never should it happen again.

Simple form says the Magpies will win. You'd hope Sydney give a better account of themselves but injury and now confidence look to be a negative factor.

Match Selection: Collingwood by 28 points

Suggested Bets: Collingwood 25+ @ $2.35
