2023 AFL Round 8 Preview – GEELONG v ADELAIDE

Racing and Sports will provide analysis of many games in the 2023 AFL Season.

We'll endeavour to run through the form, incorporate appropriate stats and also supply a betting prediction which won't always just be who will win.

GEELONG v ADELAIDE

Saturday 6 May @ GMHBA Stadium

Two of those who took on vastly differing styles of games last Sunday will head to a venue which has seen one way traffic.

After the slowest of starts, Geelong has gotten moving with ferocity. They used one of their nine lives but all is back where it needs to be.

Even though Essendon tried so hard, they were no match. It is amazing how often the establishment of a lead in the early parts of a match ends up the final margin. 27 at the end of Q1 finished with 28 to end Q4.

It was a masterclass on two fronts. Patrick Dangerfield getting it out of the centre and Tom Hawkins finishing the task.

While he got a fantastic 8 goals, Hawkins could just as easily have had double figures. It wasn't for bad kicking – but for sharing all the glory.

This weekend he will find more defensive capabilities from the Crows but he loves it at home as well.

Those Adelaide defenders did a great job for literally 99% of the Collingwood event. They lost the front only in the final minute of what was a pulsating contest.

But once again they have an Achilles Heel and it comes in the form of goal kicking. That old adage of Bad Kicking is Bad Football is never truer for the Crows.

7.16 only needed one of those to be up the centre and they win. And many of them were right in front. Oh they might rue that come September.

You can't degrade their effort or performance as a whole. They even managed to hold Nick Daicos to under 30. Seemingly focus on him results in much better team results.

The last time Adelaide beat Geelong at the Cattery was – wait for it – 2003. That is 12 on the trot. What would make you believe anything would be different this time no matter how well the Crows have been playing?

So it's Geelong again. Either their red hot form has to get cold or injuries take hold and we don't wish that on anyone.

An old alum Patrick Dangerfield loves playing Adelaide so watch him go bananas.

Match Selection: Geelong by 25 points
