Opals' Talbot makes All-Star Five at WC

Opals small forward Steph Talbot has been rewarded for her consistent World Cup campaign in Sydney with selection in the tournament's All-Star Five.

Small forward Steph Talbot has been selected in the World Cup's All-Star Five for her starring role in the Opals' charge to their fourth bronze medal.

Undoubtedly Australia's most consistent player at the tournament, Talbot was a defensive rock, played more minutes than any other in green and gold and was the only member of the team to record a double-double.

"I'm not necessarily always the top-scorer but I'm going to do everything I can to help this team," Talbot told reporters.

"Whether it's lock-down defence, getting rebounds, I guess I've just been trying my best to get us over the line."

Reigning WNBA defensive player of the year A'ja Wilson was named tournament MVP for guiding the USA to a fourth consecutive World Cup gold medal.

Wilson averaged more points than any other American at the tournament and was joined in the team by her captain Breanna Stewart, who was named MVP at the last edition in 2018.

A constant scoring threat for China on their run to the final, towering centre Han Xu also made the All-Star Five and was met with cheers from the pro-China crowd that stayed behind after the final.

Canada's three-point ace Bridget Carleton rounded out the team after helping her country defy pre-tournament predictions and storm into their first World Cup semi-final since 1986.
