Manly great Noel Cleal has retired from his position as Sea Eagles recruitment manager as the club continues to reconfigure following Des Hasler's exit.

Cleal was a favourite of ousted coach Hasler, the pair having played together for NSW at State of Origin level, Australia and at the Sea Eagles when they won the 1987 grand final.

Post-retirement, Cleal was on the Sea Eagles' staff when Hasler guided the club to the 2008 and 2011 premierships and he followed the coach to Canterbury to become recruitment manager.

Cleal joins rehabilitation coach Cameron Ferguson, head of performance Donny Singe and elite pathways manager Kristie Fulton in leaving the club after Hasler was fired as coach in October in the aftermath of the club's pride jersey saga.

"The Sea Eagles sincerely thank Noel for all he has done for our club and congratulate him on a wonderful career," said Sea Eagles CEO Tony Mestrov in a statement.

"We wish him good luck in the future."

Cleal retires from rugby league after more than 40 years working at the game's elite level.

He made his first-grade debut with Eastern Suburbs in 1980 but became a household name during seven seasons at Manly between 1983 and 1989.

In that period, Cleal captained the Sea Eagles, was twice named Dally M Second Rower of the Year and represented both Australia and the NSW State of Origin team for the first time.

Cleal plans to retire to the mid-north coast of NSW with his wife.
