Outside backs stay on Cowboys' NRL radar for 2024

North Queensland coach Todd Payten has revealed a recent extended NRL road trip to Sydney also doubled as a recruitment drive as the Cowboys look to bolster their 2024 roster.

Payten's side suffered consecutive defeats to Wests Tigers and Parramatta during their fortnight in Sydney last month but the third-year Cowboys coach was busy off the field dabbling in roster improvements.

The Cowboys previously lured now co-captain Chad Townsend following a meeting in NSW two years ago and Payten said outside backs were still the priority for next season.

"We met several players to be fair," Payten confirmed on Friday.

"Young, experienced, different positions.

"We're always looking to strengthen our roster and we took that opportunity to meet a couple of players."

With Peta Hiku departing at season's end to Hull KR in the English Super League, the veteran's centre position will be up for grabs.

The Cowboys recently signed Semi Valemei from Canberra as a utility back but the 24-year-old is yet to crack a maiden appearance at his new club.

Meanwhile, Payten will give Jason Taumalolo until game-day eve to prove his fitness after being sidelined with a knee injury since mid-April.

The Cowboys, should Taumalolo be included for Sunday's home clash with Melbourne, will name a full-strength 17 for the first time this season.

Taumalolo trained on Tuesday and Thursday and coaching staff will make a call whether to include the barnstorming forward or opt for another week off, with the club set for their first bye in round 15.

"He's got a bit more work to do before we make a decision. Things are looking positive," Payten said of his co-captain.

"Whichever way we go our decision will be based on what's best for Jason long-term.

"If he gets another 14 days between games that's another 14 days for his knee to heal a little bit, get some more (kilometres) in the legs, then we'll be making the smart decision.

"But, a lot of that will be based on how Jase is feeling himself. He's grown in confidence when I've spoken to him the last couple of times.

"We'll just get through tomorrow first."
