Hussonet Clicks With Danehill Mares

Noted sire Hussonet, currently the most successful sire of Group One winners standing in the southern hemisphere, has begun the new season with a flourish, highlighting the affinity he has with Danehill line mares.

Onpicalo’s win at Caulfield on August 15 was his seventh in 27 starts and made him the third metropolitan winner by Hussonet since August 1, all breed from mares by sons of Danehill.

Onpicalo, a six-year-old gelding out of a Danzero mare, followed on from a close third at Flemington on August 8 on a day when Hussonet sired two city winners in Melbourne and Brisbane.

The John Sadler-trained Charmed Harmony, out of a Danehill Dancer mare, made it 10 wins from 24 outings with his third win in succession over 1400m at Flemington while Rosenet, a 5YO mare produced by the Redoute’s Choice mare Little Flower, was successful for the sixth time in 18 starts over 1200m at Doomben.

The common significant link is that all three winners continued the excellent strike rate Hussonet, a US-bred son of Mr Prospector, has had in Australia with Danehill mares since he was imported in 2003 from Chile where he was already established as a super sire.

The products from the Hussonet/Danehill cross include three G1 winners Reaan (dam by Danehill), Gold Trail (Danewin) and Eagle Falls (Desert King) and other Group winners Colorado Claire (Flying Spur), Miss Darcey (Danzero), Stepitup (Nothin’ Leica Dane), Good Baby (Danehill) and Mahara (Desert King).

Hussonet boasts an overall stud record of 743 individual winners (93 SWs) of over 2200 races from 940 runners from his seasons in Chile and Australia. His Australian sired progeny last season included 60 winners of 101 races from 142 starters

His progeny have earned more than $63 million worldwide and he is placed 18th on a world honour board of sires of G1 winners with 30 to his name above such illustrious names as A.P. Indy, Seattle Slew, Bold Ruler and Nasrullah.

Hussonet was Champion Sire in Chile on seven occasions and leading juvenile sire five times before he was imported to Australia by Arrowfield Stud.

Now standing at Cornerstone Stud in South Australia, Hussonet’s Chilean-bred stars include Host, a Chilean champion at two and three and successful in the US in the G1 Keeneland Turf Mile and fourth in the G1 Dubai Duty Free at the Dubai Cup meeting.

Host was also imported to Australia for stud duty and now stands at Willow Grove Stud in South Australia. His successful progeny includes G2 Tulloch Stakes winner and G1 ATC Derby third Philippi and stakes winner Hosting.

Hosting won the Weekend Hussler Stakes at Caulfield, a race named after a star member of Hussonet’s first Australian crop. Weekend Hussler, a seven time G1 winner and Australian Horse of the Year, was produced by a daughter of Helissio (Fairy King) and an At Talaq mare.

Hussonet covered 62 mares at Cornerstone Stud last season and like his sire Mr. Prospector, who got Kentucky Derby winner and dual hemisphere sire Fusaichi Pegasus when he was 26 and other G1 winners at 27 and 28, should continue to be a reliable source of high class winners while in the second decade of his stud career.
