Home Track Choice For Promising Deceptive

Local trainer Jenny Graham has taken the home option by deciding to bypass a start at Scone on Saturday with her promising filly Deceptive in favour of a start at Port Macquarie on Sunday.

However, Graham is still agonizing over whether she has made the right decision to start Deceptive in Sunday’s Strongbow 2YO over 1100m.

Graham has elected to run Deceptive, winner of two of her first three starts, on her home track in preference to the Listed $140,000 Woodlands Stakes at Scone after she drew barrier 13 in a field of 14.

“I agonized over whether to take her to Scone and I am still not sure if I have made the right decision staying at home,” Graham said.

“Eventually the wide draw swayed me to scratch her from Scone and run her at home.

“It would be hard to win at Scone from a wide barrier against a quality field plus by staying here I can walk her out the gate and across to the track.

“However there is a big difference in the weights and I am not sure that the distance of Sunday’s race really suits her.

“I really think she is looking for 1200 metres now.”

Deceptive has 59.5kg on Sunday compared to 56kg at Scone.

She will be ridden by Robert Thompson with Graham to decide after this race whether to give the I Am Invincible filly a break or look for another race for her.

Deceptive under lined her ability with a debut second to the unbeaten Shinji at Grafton before winning at Taree and Muswellbrook.

Shinji has since gone on to win successive races at Eagle Farm. He also is an acceptor for the Woodlands Stakes at Scone as well as Saturdays Listed Lancaster Stakes at Doomben ánd is favoured to run in the latter race.

Deceptive’s opposition on Sunday includes last start winners Felines (Dale Spriggs) and Alymeld (Jasen Watkins) and the interesting first starter Cavell (Peter Graham).

Cavell was previously trained by Team Hawkes before he was taken over by a local syndicate and given to Port trainer John Sprague after a fourth in a trial at Rosehill in January.
