Cassandra hoping her gift horse has a golden shine

When Cassandra Stummer was pre-training a yearling filly by Jukebox for owner John Ramsey she was so taken with her that she’d dream about being given the chance to train her.

What the 29-year-old couldn't have imagined when Ramsey said yes is that filly, named Shine Your Light, would take her to the $1 million Golden Gift (1100m) at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday with a realistic chance.

With first prizemoney of $580,000 it's a far cry from where her last couple of winners have come from, Wauchope and Inverell, but she's taking it all in her stride.

"When she was a yearling we had a bit of an opinion of her,'' she said.

"I told John Ramsey that she goes good and I really liked her and I always said, joking with him, we'll keep this one and he said 'that's good because you're training her'.

"Our last winner was at a non-TAB meeting and we brought home $6400, it's pretty surreal really.

"It's a million dollar race, so we're excited. Off her first run I think she deserves her spot, it'll be exciting to see what happens."

Muswellbrook based Cassandra Stummer, a mother of three, has around 20 horses in her name and could be forgiven for dreaming about a Golden Slipper berth if Shine Your Light improves on her promising debut a few weeks ago at Randwick where she ran third in the Kirkham Plate.

A top two finish in the Golden Gift would earn enough prizemoney for connections of those youngsters to sit back and plan their way to the $5 million two-year-old classic next March without worrying about having enough in the bank to make the final field.

Shine Your Light started $17 on debut on the back of an easy trial win at Scone and after being pocketed behind the leaders she closed off her race late to be beaten 1-1/2 lengths by Barber.

The filly posted the race's third fastest last 600m (35.28) and second fastest last 200m (12.18, Punter's Intelligence) and was $15 with TAB on Thursday in the Golden Gift.

"We were stoked. We didn't have many options so it was either chuck her in the paddock or send her down and she pulled up well from the trial so we thought why not,'' Stummer said.

"She's always been really mature mentally. Physically, she could develop a bit more but she's so lovely to deal with.

"She's always worked with older horses too, we've never had a young horse to go with her.

"It would have been interesting if she did get out a little earlier in that race. In her trial she did take a while to wind up so I think the 1100m will suit her a lot better.

"Half the horses she's against on the weekend she raced against the other week and she was right up to that. If she can get out a bit earlier I think she will make the finish interesting."

Fillies have won two of the three editions to date of the Golden Gift in the shape of Dame Giselle in 2019 and Sneaky Five in 2020.

Jockey Reece Jones is rapt to have retained the ride on Shine Your Light for the Golden Gift and is keen to repay the faith after that encouraging debut and hopes for a little more luck from another inside barrier.

He said he's known Ramsey, Stummer and her partner Daniel Northey for some time as he was coming through the apprentice ranks in Scone and believes the filly has plenty of upside.

"I really like her, I've got a bit of time for her. She tries hard, she's still learning her craft but she's a quick learner,'' he said.

"She was racing in pretty restricted room and for a filly to show the determination to take narrow gaps says a lot about her ability to be a racehorse.

"She'd only had one trial and one race start, I think she will come on really well for it."
