Oakbank experience key as Rich Gina lines up in Railway

Morphettville horseman Peter Blanch is hoping a couple of spins around Oakbank as a three-year-old will have Rich Gina well placed in Saturday’s $127,250 Hills Railway Stakes (1100m).

Rich Gina finished midfield in last year's Shillabeer Plate before she took some significant steps in her second race campaign.

She won two of her first five starts as a four-year-old and finished just behind the placegetters in the Listed City Of Marion Stakes.

"She certainly come back a more mature horse in both brain and body,'' Blanch said.

Rich Gina has been an eye catcher in two runs back from a spell, running second behind Bubble Over first-up from a spell at Murray Bridge before she was narrowly beaten by Heka Express at Morphettville on the Parks last time out.

And Blanch is hoping the forecast of some wet weather on Friday can help offset the extreme outside barrier draw and erase memories of a luckless 2019 Railway Stakes when Zalmona was narrowly beaten by subsequent Group 1 Goodwood winner Despatch in the feature.

"This race and the way the draw does shape up similar to the other year,'' Blanch said.

"If the rain does come the negative draw could turn into a positive, it could be a blessing in disguise.

"She gets back in her races as a rule, so hopefully in the big field the speed will be on and she can be the strong horse late,'' he said.

Blanch and wife Belinda also take exciting three-year-old prospect Validated to Oakbank for the $107,250 Shillabeer Plate (1400m) on the back of successive city wins.

The stable has booked apprentice Sheriden Tomlinson and his three kilogram claim to help offset his big weight.

"He's going to be the hunted horse, but I'm happy with the draw,'' Blanch said.

"If it is a wet track, we really have no idea. He's never been on one, but he finds a way to win and there is still some upside there,'' he said.
