Japanese Group 1 Shuka Sho Preview

Group 1 racing continues in Japan this weekend at Hanshin racecourse with the third leg of the fillies’ triple crown to be run over 2000m.

Stars On Earth is looking to become just the seventh filly in history to complete the triple crown and emulate recent stars Daring Tact and Almond Eye.

Starting $14 in the Oka Sho (Guineas) over a mile, she flew home to win on the line and rated 116 by Timeform before a much more dominant win in the Yushun Himba (Oaks) where she relished the mile and a half and rated 120.

She didn't start favourite there either but is sure to here and looks a logical one, however no good thing. She comes here first up having required surgery to remove bone chips in both forelegs. Having only been in work for a couple of months, she'll need to be at near her best to win.

Interestingly, only Almond Eye (121) has won the race in recent years rating over 117 so perhaps Stars On Earth may be able to get away with being a length or two off her peak, but any more and she'll be beaten.

Stunning Rose looks the logical danger. Damian Lane rode her to a second placing behind Stars On Earth in the Oaks, beaten 1.25 lengths, but she's had the benefit of a run this campaign, narrowly taking out the Group 3 Shion Stakes (2000m) at Nakayama.

She rated 113 there off a 117 peak in the Oaks which gives her a solid platform to find her best again.

Namur ran third in the Oaks behind those two and wasn't beaten far and from the look of her work, as well the stable's comments, she has really matured over the break and furnished into a type, with the 2000m potentially suiting better than the 2400m.

Art House won the Shuka Sho trial last start at Chukyo as favourite, running 108 with Timeform- the same number she ran when beaten 6.3 lengths in the Oaks behind Stars On Earth. She's progressive but will need to improve a couple of lengths again.

The best roughie may be Sound Vivace. She led Stunning Rose in the Shion Stakes as a 5-1 shot and was only overhauled late, running a new peak of 112, up from 104 when beaten 2.1 lengths by Namur in The Tulip Sho.

She'd need to improve another couple of lengths but include her in exotics at $23-26.

I think the late market and any comments from the yard will be key here with Stars On Earth. She's clearly the best filly in the race and rates as the horse to beat, but the little niggles over her preparation have me siding with #7 Stunning Rose.
