Canberra Racing Preview – Friday 17 May 2024

They are racing on the Action Poly track for the first time this season. The surface lived up to expectations when commissioned last year giving every runner their chance. A tidy betting program.

Race 1 1080m Bm50

CHAMPAGNE IN LACE (4) resumed improved winning here at this level on the turf. Was well beaten into fourth in a 58, following on a heavy track at Goulburn. She led winning her Maiden here by 3L taking to the poly surface. Has a handy 2kg claim and fitter she can bounce back. WHITE LIAR (2) has disappointed her last two starts but her form prior stacks up. Has an awkward gate to manage but this track plays fair. Has a handy 3kg claim in easier grade and is a course/ distance winner.  LOVE OF AIR (3) also comes back a level and assesses her on the CL2 win at the Sapphire Coast three back. She placed her only start on this surface and maps for a soft run on a 5-day return. ROSY SUE (10) has a wide gate but is better suited in this grade and going well enough to consider.

Race 2 1280m Bm65

CHASING A QUID (1) narrowly missed the hat-trick here on the turf and tackled a 74 at Wagga following beaten just 2.2L. Gets more weight but comes back several levels in grade. He's placed on this surface and should go close. CRAVING MAGIC (3) resumes and won back-to-back before the spell. He's placed 2/2 fresh and has the speed to clear the outside gate. No surprise if he comes back further improved. SAIKO (7) threatened on the Canberra turf and at Albury following before a plainer effort at Moruya where he didn't have the best of it. Peaks now and has placed 2/2 on this track. Keep the handy 2kg claim and is decent each-way chance.  FAIRNESS IS BEST (6) resumes and is proven fresh. Has the rails gate and Penza is a positive jockey booking. Keep onside.

Race 3 1080m Mdn

A wide barrier cruelled Gratz Vella-trained GOOD PRIZE (1) at Moruya, and he improved again following when narrowly beaten at Queanbeyan. He peaks today on a quick backup and should be well-acquainted with the Acton track. He's ready to win. GRINS (3) is still new but has shown enough at both starts to suggest that fitter she has a decent chance. Went close here on debut on the turf and Bensley rides and is likely to push forward from the awkward gate. SAKIMARJUEL (4) positioned handy but didn't finish it off at Wagga. He was narrowly beaten at the Sapphire Coast prior and that's a better measure of his ability. He has a sticky gate but gets in well with the 2kg claim. Nick Olive-trained ABITSUSS (5) debuted here on the turf and was immediately turned out. Resumes today with Penza engaged and that creates interest. The filly needs some luck in transit but will be naturally improved and goes in at a price.

Race 4 1080m Bm70 - Federal

CHOP THE ICE (10) resumed with a nose defeat at Albury on good going in a CL2. Has comparable figures from stronger races and tumbles 4kgs in weight today. Has been kept on the fresh side and is a course/distance winner. Proven second-up and from an inside barrier will be hard to beat.  INCENTIVE (2) resumes for Canberra's premier barn and better to forgive his two outings before the spell. He's placed 3/4 fresh and has the speed to make short work of the awkward barrier. Trusting him to race more economically than the last time we saw him in Canberra. ARTIE BEE (4) was quickly back on track narrowly beaten in a 66 at Moruya. Races forward and the 3kg claim brings him into it. I AM MAMWAAZEL (1) resumes, and two-back was nudged out in a 72 at Warwick Farm. He was only beaten 1.8L here fresh prior over 1206m at this level. Has claims as well.

Race 5 1280m Mdn

SIR MAURICE (1) resumes and has been racing in stronger provincial and metro Maidens. Has pieces of form that stack right up and he's trialled sharply at Warwick Farm for his return. He can use the rail and is well placed with the 4kg claimer engaged. GRADI (15) resumes for the sharp Matt Dale yard and both his race starts have been fresh. Was well supported at Goulburn last time but was caught wide on speed. He will be naturally improved and maps for a soft run. Each way. There's been plenty of early money to suggest ALLEGRO MISS (9) will race boldly. Placed at Goulburn when expected to need it and has more to give. Has been giving away starts but this track plays fair. EASEMENT (2) will be better second-up and his Goulburn effort three back rated well enough to give him some hope.

Race 6 1206m Cl1

SIOVY DANE (8) is a leader who missed a nose at Newcastle before being headed late here on the turn beaten 2L over 1300m. Has a small claim today and comes back 95m. Rates well and the circuit should suit. Clearly on top after scratchings. LADY REVOLUTION (6) resumes for Nick Olive and comes right into it now. Was spelled off the debut win and she did about what was expected first-up. Map for the run of the race and Krough stays aboard. FAR TOO HOT (9) deserved the bush win and is still shy of his best efforts. Will ride the speed from an inside barrier and is in light with the 3kg claim. SINGLE BEAT (7) is in a canny local yard and will be better second-up. Has a 2kg claim and deserves consideration.
