Begonia Belle Stakes

The Begonia Belle Stakes is a Group 3 race run under Set Weights and Penalty conditions for four year old and up mares at Flemington conducted by the Victoria Racing Club.

The Begonia Belle Stakes is run over 1100m. It was first run in 2005 and was won by Covet Thee.

The race is named after a Newmarket winner Begonia Belle and was moved to Derby Day in 2016 when the carnival had a shake-up.

It has been always run at 1100m.

The Begonia Belle Stakes was a handicap but became Listed in 2009 and Group 3 from 2013.

2016 winner Sheidel would place in a Winterbottom then, after a spell, win the Oakleigh Plate first up.

Ortensia herself won this race then won the Winterbottom in 2011. She'd win the Alquoz Sprint in Meydan four months later and a Nunthorpe in the August of 2012.

Tofane scored in the All Aged Stakes in the Autumn following her win in this race to end the 2019 Spring.

The Begonia Belle Stakes was worth $200,000 in 2023.

Notable winners of the Begonia Belle Stakes include Asfoora (2022), Fiesta (2020), Tofane (2019), Sheidel (2016), Ortensia (2011) and Very Discreet (2009).

The 2023 Begonia Belle Stakes was won by Queen Of The Ball from Hypothetical and Dancing Alone.
