WA connection locks in Eureka slot

Prominent WA owner-breeder Rob Watson has confirmed My Ultimate Ronnie will represent his Soho Standardbreds slot in this year’s inaugural edition of The Eureka (2400m) at Menangle.

My Ultimate Ronnie, last seen winning the $50,000 APG 4YO Entires & Geldings APG Gold Bullion last month, has built an imposing record of 16 wins from 25 starts.

Watson said the Jarrod Alchin-trained pacer quickly became an obvious choice.

"He came on the radar following his three-year-old New South Wales bred (Breeders Challenge) second to Leap To Fame," Watson told TABradio.

"I've been following the horse through its four-year-old races in the Hondo Grattan and the Chariots, where he drew the outside of the front line and they were great runs.

"It's versatility, good gate speed and I think it will get over the distance pretty well, so it seemed like a pretty good choice after Catch A Wave and Captain Ravishing were taken."

My Ultimate Ronnie is set to head to Queensland to tackle The Rising Sun on July 8, almost two months before The Eureka on September 2.

Watson said while he wanted to win The Eureka, he was mindful of picking a horse that can guarantee the best return on his investment.

"It's quite a big investment to put in, so you're trying to perhaps run top three to get something back," he said.

"It's excited to be involved in and it's like business really, trying to get the deal done."

"He looks like a horse that fits that bill.

"It was a good time to get in and strike before someone else takes the horse."
