Twelve months ago after winning the 2022 Inter Dominion Trotters Final, driver Greg Sugars thought that Just Believe could not be much better but the seven-year-old gelding raised it even further with his victory in heat seven of the ID23 Trotters Championship at Albion Park on Saturday.

Completing the clean sweep of the trotters heats over the three rounds, Just Believe ($1.12 favourite) had Sugars reaching for words such was his amazement at the more than three second smashing of an old Albion Park mile rate with a new mark of 1:57.5.

"He did it incredibly comfortably and sometimes when he's in front he can switch off and be a bit casual," Sugars said.

"Having Gus ($31) up outside us kept him honest but it really kept his mind on the job.

"I had that much horse left turning into the straight that he really felt like he was in second gear.

"He's just about a perfect racehorse and that horse kept him honest but he didn't get upset by it. I thought 'righto time to go' and away he went.

"I'm sort of lost for words. I don't know how to describe him. He's an amazing horse."

In heat six, Queen Elida set a fresh mile rate record of 1:59.6, which eclipsed the previous 2:00.6 set twice in 2019.

Just Believe, 30 minutes later, went two seconds quicker again.

Though placed twice, Sugars and trainer Jesss Tubbs took Just Believe to Sweden earlier this year without a win, and it was other trainers and drivers offering sage advice as to how a new peak was still achievable for his star trotter.

"I didn't think it could be possible that he could be better," Sugars said.

"Pre the Sweden trip both Chris Lang and Anthony Butt, who have had experience travelling horses like that, they said not to worry because the horse will come back better.

"I thought I couldn't see that happening, but he seems to have gone to a new level."

In the earlier heat, driver Chris Alford was relieved to see Queen Elida return to the winners' stall after finishing second in heats in the first two rounds.

The $1.65 favourite pushed forward early over the 2680-metres of heat six in a welcome back to winning form.

Alford identifying acclimatising to Brisbane's humid summer being a factor.

"I was concerned after the first night but Brent (Lilley, trainer) has her back to where she should be and all going forward she's still on the rise for next week," Alford said.

"We talked about it and (with the weather) she may never have seen humidity in her life being a kiwi and then a Victorian so she has adjusted well now and all is good for next week, hopefully."
