Its Merlin and his fellow four-year olds will be chasing a place in next week's Group 1 Chariots of Fire when they line up in the night's feature, the Cordina Chicken Farms Paleface Adios Stakes. Race-by-race preview of Menangle, Saturday February 24

Race 1: ALLIED EXPRESS APP PACE

Major Major (1) chased a smart one when runner up at this circuit last week. That was his first outing for five weeks so it should have improved him and it continued a string of wins and placings at this circuit. Big chance to go one better. Brooklyn Bridge (6) was just behind Major Major when he resumed with a third last week. He draws wider but goes very well second-up with three wins and a placing from four attempts so should be improved. Loves this longer distance, winning four of five tries. Danger. Talent Agent (2) resumes having ended last campaign with four successive wins, last seen when taking out the Christmas Gift Final here in December. Has trialled and draws nicely so can make an impact. Our Vincent Can Gogh (5) has been taking on strong opposition of late so will enjoy this company.

Race 2: BESTINBEDS.COM.AU PACE

Prepared to forgive the latest result of Catalpa Rescue (3) when he was forced to work and instead assess his chances off a second-up win at Ballarat two back. Proven at this circuit having won a heat of last year's NSW Derby. Can measure up from a favourable draw. Im In Trouble (1) has been racing consistently since scoring from the back row at Penrith, last week leading and fighting well to go under by a neck at this circuit. Has the speed to take advantage of the ace draw and be in this for a long way. Major Perry (7) performed below market expectations when resuming last week but his second-up record is sound so he is worthy of another chance. Saginaw (5) produced some good form here last campaign including a win two back. Keep safe resuming off a solid trial. JOE NIEN (4) can be competitive after getting close for third last week.

Race 3: GARRARDS REAL REWARDS PACE

Sooner The Bettor (6) performed well without a lot of luck at his Australian debut, racing three wide when a 3.8m fourth in the Hondo Grattan. He was mixing it against the best of his age group in NZ last season, placing in the G1 New Zealand Derby. Strong claims. Our Vinnie (1) did a good job at his first outing for the Grimson yard, beating Sooner The Bettor home when runner up in the Hondo Grattan. Gets the ace draw again so should enjoy a soft run and will strip fitter second up. Mister Robin Hood (2) is progressive having won his last two starts here, last week leading from this draw to score by close to 7m. Can measure right up. Stravinsky (9) draws out and tackles some handy rivals but is going really well, recording back-to-back wins before placing last time. Respect. Don Hugo (3) draws well and is building towards a win having finished runner up in both starts since a spell.

Race 4: DAHUA COMMUNITY PACE

Last season's Queensland Derby runner-up Wisper A Secret (6) will be improved by an encouraging fresh effort where he drew the back row and worked before chasing a smart one to finish runner up at Albion Park. He is yet to miss a place second-up so and looks well placed. There was plenty to like about the latest effort of My Ultimate Snowy (5) when second at this circuit from a similar barrier. He'll be reaching peak fitness now and his record at this distance is strong. Primary contender. Our Uncle Jim (4) didn't miss by much when runner up in this company two back before dropping in grade and working but proving too strong last time. Can be competitive again. Rockokoko (7) is good enough to feature with a touch of luck.

Race 5: CORDINA CHICKEN FARMS PALEFACE ADIOS STAKES

Star Kiwi ITS MERLIN (9) arrives with a big reputation and four successive wins to his name including a NZ Derby victory over Dont Stop Dreaming, a rival who has already franked the form in Australia. He is full of class and won his only attempt at the mile. Can kick off on this side of the Tasman with a win. Better Be The Best (6) used his speed to full advantage for a second-up win here last week, finding the front from a wider barrier and drawing away to score by 8m. He is four from four third-up so will be at his peak. For Real Life (7) is a progressive Queenslander who made it five in a row with a resuming win at Albion Park. Won over this distance the only time he raced here. Can measure up. Captain Hammerhead (1) has won a trial since working for a resuming fourth in the G2 Bonanza at Melton. He is three from three second-up and has the gate speed to give a sight from the ace draw. Tough barrier for Perfect Class (12) but he is a Breeders Crown winner with the class to feature

Race 6: AINSWORTH A-STAR PACE

Dont Stop Dreaming (9) (pictured) has been terrific so far in Australia, chasing Leap To Fame for a closing second in the Hunter Cup before showing an impressive turn of speed to win the Hondo Grattan in his first visit to this circuit. He has the class to overcome the outside draw and win again. Expensive Ego (5) makes his first appearance since last year's winter carnival in Brisbane but he flies fresh with four wins and a placing from five attempts. Readied with two trials and his circuit and distance strike rates are impressive. His best measures up. Magician (3) gets a better draw and that can see him feature in the finish. Ideal Escape (4) has been taking on good company in Victoria. Goes well at this distance so could play a role.

Race 7: APG PACING WITH EXCITEMENT TROTTERS DISCRETIONARY HANDICAP

Van Sank (8) brings strong form from Brisbane having won his last two outings at Albion Park. Has had six weeks off but was kept up to the mark with a trial and he owns a good record at this circuit. Good enough to win from the 30m handicap. Majestic Trio (9) starts alongside him on that mark and she is going well, winning here two back before placing from a wide barrier last time. Race fit and must rate as a danger. Victree Hill (5) raced wide last start so prepared to forgive that. Was building nicely before that including a nose second two back so he is worth another chance. Scruffy Doolan (4) has been solid enough in two outings since winning here so is worth including.

Race 8: CONDELL PARK PRODUCE LADYSHIP PACE

Illavabubbles (7) has been flying since arriving in Sydney, making if four from four at this circuit by leading from a similar draw last week and going on to salute by 5.5m. Beat many of these rivals there and they'll have a tough time turning the tables. Promiseland (4) has placed in both starts this time in, chasing Illavabubbles to finish runner up last week. She races well third up so should strip fitter again. Heavenly Holly (5) is close to a win after back-to-back placings at this venue and should be reaching her peak fourth up. The has been some merit in the last couple of outings of SOHO RHAPSODY (3) and she draws closer to the pegs so include.
