Bond Team Take Aim With Forgotten Pacer

Leading training combination Greg and Skye Bond will be breaking new ground when Bettor Aim makes his imminent return to racing.

Bettor Aim hasn't started for more than five years and had been retired and deregistered from racing.

The nine-year-old had his first public outing since February 2019 in a 2185m trial at Pinjarra yesterday, which he won in a time of 1:58.9.

Co-trainer Greg Bond said he'd never trained a horse who had returned from such a long layoff.

"We retired him because he had a suspensory injury," Bond told The Trots WA.

"This is Skye's work to get him back to this stage and she wanted to give him another go.

"We couldn't get his gait sorted or find out why he was breaking in his races.

"We did some other tests on him and got him to a stage where he's been doing everything right and running race times at home.

"Skye likes a challenge and we've never had one like this."

Bettor Aim compiled a formidable record on the track of nine wins and two placings from 16 starts, including a Nights Of Thunder heat win.

One of his unplaced efforts included a fifth in the 2018 Golden Nugget, won by his stablemate Ana Malak.

Bond said he hoped to have Bettor Aim racing in the coming weeks.

"When he's ready to go then we will be in a position to go and race," he said.

"He's got to go to metropolitan racing and if everything goes well hopefully he's got something in the tank.

"Off his work at home I think he'd be competitive."

The Bond team also had former New Zealand pacer Tualou have his first trial earlier in the afternoon, where won in 1:58.6.

Bond said the three-year-old "looked to have a bright future".
