Alalawi, Bouresly and Watson share highlights on a competitive Meydan Sunday card

Racing at Meydan on Sunday was highlighted by a trio of AED95,000 handicaps, arguably highlighted by the valuable1900m turf handicap in which Castlebar produced a gritty performance, always answering the urgings of Adrie de Vries, to land the spoils for Helal Alalawi and Fahad Mohammed Aloraini and establish a new track record in the process.

Settled just behind early leader Franz Kafka, the winner was sent for home entering the straight when that rival weakened and just galloped resolutely all the way to the line, always seemingly holding the challenges of Tell Me Thunder  and Ursa Major.

A 4yo gelded son of invincible Spirit, this was his fourth start, all this season, for current connections and a third career success, after just nine attempts, having won twice in Britain for Charlie Appleby and Godolphin.

De Vries said: "He is a nice horse who arrived with some good form from England and he has travelled very nicely throughout and then galloped on strongly."

The equally valuable 1200m dirt handicap was totally dominated by trainer Rashed Bouresly and horses owned by the Bouresly Racing Syndicate, Shanty Star , completing a double on the card for Richard Mullen, denying stablemate Tabarak close home with connections' third runner, Miqyaas, snatching second in the dying strides leaving Tabarak in third place.

A 6yo Hard Spun entire, Mullen had won a lesser 1400m handicap on him just last Sunday and this was a third career success for the horse who won a 1600m maiden on the Meydan dirt surface in March 2020.

Mullen said: "I was always prominent on him last week but he did not break so well this time and they went very hard up front so it took me a while to get competitive.
"I was a bit worried dropping back to 1200m but, turning in, I knew he was close enough and would stay on strongly which is exactly what happened. It is a great result for the Bouresly team."

The finale, also over 1200m but on turf, was won by Shadwell's Jadwal  who ran on strongly once grabbing the initiative about 300m out under Dane O'Neill for Doug Watson who was completing a double on the card.

A 4yo homebred gelded son of Mustajeeb, he and O'Neill had won a course and distance handicap at the previous domestic fixture a fortnight ago and this victory should have cemented his Dubai World Cup Carnival claims.

Watson said: "Depending on what the handicapper does we will look at the fixtures but there is a handicap at the carnival if he remains eligible. If not we will have to step him up in class."

The fixture's only Purebred Arabian race, the opening 1600m dirt conditions contest for 4yos, was turned into a procession by Barakka , shedding his maiden tag on just his second start, Ray Dawson, sporting the silks of Sultan Ali, in the saddle for Ahmad bin Harmash.

Third on his debut, a fortnight ago, in a 1400m maiden here at Meydan, he had clearly benefitted from the experience and the extra 200m certainly seemed to suit him because he looked the only possible winner from early in the straight.

It was not quite as easy but One Idea  was the comfortable winner of a 1600m turf maiden, saddled by Doug Watson for Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum whose retained jockey, Andrea Atzeni, performed the steering.

A 5yo gelded son of Dubawi, he was opening his account at the seventh attempt and just fourth start since joining Watson, having his first start for the yard in January 2021, his only previous UAE turf outing.

Atzeni said: "He did that quite nicely today and has appreciated the return to turf, the mile was ideal and the fast ground has suited him. Hopefully he can build on this."

Mayaadeen and Perfect Balance  were first and second throughout the duration of the 1600m dirt handicap with the latter grabbing the initiative 500m out and never looking likely to relinquish it under Tadhg O'Shea, riding for Bhupat Seemar in the colours of Desert Rose Racing.

A 4yo gelded son of Invincible Spirit, he was having just his second start for new connections having won once in Britain for his breeders Godolphin and trainer Saeed bin Suroor having raced for them on five occasions.

The 1600m turf handicap was contested at a scorching early gallop which really suited Kaheall  who was settled near the back of the capacity field of 16 before weaving between runners throughout the straight, hitting the front just inside the final 175m under a masterful Richard Mullen ride for Salem bin Ghadayer and Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

A 4yo gelded son of Muhaarar and making his local debut, he had previously won three of his five starts in Britain for William Haggas and looks an exciting new recruit to the UAE for connections.

Mullen said: "He was pretty fresh going to the start after a break but relaxed perfectly in the race and then quickened in the style of a class horse. That was a very pleasing UAE debut."
